  1. Seriously?!? Josh do not leave do not lay low keep asking for info. Those of us that truly appreciate what WAMAS Is will stick with you thick and thin! Keep it up! With out newbies like us this hobby dies with the old guard

  2. Oooo ok I'll delete pics from older threads thanks maybe if you can delete the post about me needing am id I pretty much got what I needed from that one

Don't delete till you've saved them to photobucket or a gallery we like seeing the progress!!

  3. Currently I don't. Thanks for the d120 rec. I've heard/read good things about them. I think part of my hesitation is that I'm not sure if/when I'll upgrade (or to what size). In our current apartment I will almost certainly stick with the 15 so it will depend on future living situation. Do people think it would be worth the extra money to go with an ecoxotic lighting fixture? Or would maybe a Par38 bulb be best?

+1 they aren't too expensive if wanting a d120 I've heard nothing but rave reviews so far

  4. So, unfortunately I did not discover WAMAS until after I set up the lighting for my aquarium and now I'm in the following dilemma. I'm currently using the Finnex Ray 2 daylight (all white) and my 15 gal (12 inches deep). All my corals seem to be doing well (not SPS), but I'd like to add some blue light for coral health and general appearance. I'm thinking about buying another Finnex Ray 2 but getting the all actnic blue version and running both, but I'm wondering if that is a waste of money and if I should invest the 90 bucks into a nicer light. I know a nicer light might be nice to have for a future upgrade, but the fact of the matter is I'm probably a couple of years away from upgrading so I'm only thinking about appropriate lighting for this system. I've done a lot of reading on lighting already, but all the info out there is a bit overwhelming so I want to get y'alls input.

Bottom line, would greatly appreciate advice on what I should do:

    1) Leave it just with current lighting

    2) Add Finnex Ray 2 actnic blue (would it be too much light to run both?)

    3) Invest in a different light (and if so, what do you recommend, taking into consideration that I don't want to break the bank and that my tank is only 12 inches deep)

    Thanks in advance!

How much are the blue accents?

  5. I've grown bio films in a lab. The population sometimes changes based upon temperature. Some only live in a narrow range. The "cold water" folks are probably guessing that the bacteria or micro-whatevers that like 68 degree water are different from the ones at 78 in their tank. Like you, I bet there's no difference and if there is, does it really matter?

The 40 mile people are probably the ones that are afraid to get a little bit of people generated doodoo in their tank. They're also surely not ones to start their cycle by peeing in it, but depending on what you drank I think that's cheaper than store-bought ammonia.

That's not how to cycle?!? No wonder ;)

  6. Seems like a little bit of a rush to me. Also, you're making a lot of assumptions about how quickly you're going to be able to cycle your tank, and how things will take place in your aquarium. Do you have any test kits yet? I know it's exciting, trust me, I really do, but you need to keep reading and learning the why behind a cycle, not just the how. Read everything you can, ask questions, and if Rob (Zygote2k) hasn't told you this already, find a good book about reefing, and read it!

Also note, that everybody who said they used Dr. Tims on this thread waited at least a month, or planned on waiting at least a month.

That being said, I have never used Dr. Tims, but would be willing to try it, and have only heard good things about it.

    +1
  7. Great info thanks. Ill just mix the aquarium sand with my existing live sand. I want a thick bed. Thanks again

Anytime, I rushed the set up of my first two tanks, big mistake. The stress, time, and aggrivation(sp) I went through because I was impatient was not worth the extra month or two I should have waited. Not to mention the loss of livestock. Moral of the story enjoy the build process, take your time, budget your spending so every week you get a new item(equipment first). Decide the type of tank you want (Fish only, Fish only with Live rock, Reef). It sounds like you have the beginnings of a very nice 30 gallon FOWLR (Fish only with Live Rock). You can always build up to a reef tank later. Think about what you want to sit down and enjoy a view of once its done. Build it in your head, then put it on paper, then rebuild it in your head again. After that research research research. You are on the right track by asking for information. Keep it up! And Start a build thread so we can all see and appreciate your hard work!

  8. Everything I've been reading has been mixed oppinions. I know some WAMAS members were talking about playsand a few months back when someone put an old bag up in the For Sale/WTB/Free sections. The one thing that would worry me is that apparently some playsand has a little bit of concrete mixed in to make it better for scultping and molding. Another thing that seems to come up alot is the silicate based playsand can cause diatom blooms and complications down the road. IMHO I would buy about 20lbs of Argonite based Aquarium sand, and 10lbs of "live" sand and mixed them together prior to adding them to the tank. the Caribsea Aragonite Sand is actually almost comparably priced to Home Depots Natural Beach Sand. Take your time. you can always wait and save money during the build process, but you cannot recoupe money lost in livestock die off down the road

  9. Ha ha...I'm starting to wonder if I have a bigger issue than I thought...like split personality reefing addiction.. I don't recall ever going to pet land nor writing the above....but what if an alter ego did.....hmmmmm...now I need to go look at both tanks for corals I don't recall purchasing :)

That's how my frag tank got started

  10. Update!!!!

So I built a sump for my 75 build. Got tired of looking at it doing nothing. So I put it to use. Got a skimmer for the 75, hob overflow. Going to have to build a sump for the 30 when the 75 is done. Here are some pictures.

Moved the uv sterilizer to the sump, the excess pump from my old Nexx filter, the heater to the sump. It's much more open now. Da Vinci doesn't know what to do with himself.

  11. +3. The fish and tanks at the Rockville Store look great and the prices are great. I've talked to the guy there a few times and he has multiple tanks himself. He has even done a good job training the staff that are in the fish dept when he's not there.

+1 I believe he's actually a wamas member to boot.

  12. I'll tell you what, Richard worked his butt off on this thing. Unfortunately I was unable to help him with any of it, which left him with hours upon hours upon hours of work. I went through the entire thread later that night and the prices you guys were scoring corals for was RIDICULOUS!

Others will try to duplicate, but nobody will compete with the quality and pricing, that's for sure.

Many thanks to Richard!! Don't think I said it already but the amount of work and stress it took on the buying end i can only imagine what he was going through!

  13. We use coffee tables and end tables to hold all our junk. It would be another spot to accumulate things. I'd rather use it as an experimental mangrove growing station...

Ooooo what about the covered idea with a planter in the middle holes drilled in the bottom. Then you can stick the mangrove stems through You can even cut in a sliding door in the top to access the skimmer Etc.

Sorry I'm at a standstill on my build.
