  1. Any one used bumble bees for this? I'm becoming over run with the stars and I believe that they are eating my zoas. I've seen them many times on my zoas and the next day a couple will have bites out of the skirt. I also notice pale spots on my devils hand leather every now and again. So to be on the safe side is like to get something to erradicate them. I've thought about harlequin shrimp but I do not want to have to chop up starfish once the asterinas are gone. Any input is helpful! Thanks!
  2. so I have a 40 breeder tank in my room that I am making into a frag tank. I had originally planned to do HOB skimmer and filters and such. I ran into the issue of surface skimming today. So I decided I could put a 20 long sump in the bottom and still use my hob skimmer some how. Now I need to figure out how to get my overflow quieter than my display. I have pipe stands in my display as it is drilled. For the 40 breeder, I have a CPR overflow that I used on my 75 gallon previously. Any ideas of build threads on how to make it super quiet, it is in my bedroom where I need to sleep every night. Thanks! Fred
  3. I posted a few days ago about my acans not doing well under my ATI fixture. I have decided to go and buy some egg crate to diffuse some light. My lights are 17'' off the water water surface. If I do this, should I lower the lights? Or is the amount light diffused by the egg crate not too sufficient?
  4. I have barnacles in one of my acros. They dont seem to bother it at all.
  5. Yeah 6x80 SunPower. I raised the light after I moved them to the shaded part of the tank. My light is now 15 inches above the tank. Which I think is high. My montipora caps were also bleaching with the light 12 inches above and they seem to have recovered their color, though the nudibranchs aren't helping with them-_-
  6. Ever since I changed my lights from LEDs to ATI T5 my acans have not been opening. They have feeders out at night but do not open during the day. My scoly that I recently got seems to be in a similar boat. My favia, trumpets and other LPS as well as my softies and acros seem fine and happy. My nitrates are a tad high, around 10-20ppm but with everything else doing fine I don't believe that is the problem. All other parameters are in check. ALK- 8dkh Ca- 480 Mg- 1350 Sg- 1.025-1.026 I have tried moving them to more shaded parts of the tank, less flow, more flow, more light... Nothing makes them happy. I got the ATI in the beginning of May Any thoughts?
  7. I bought coral Rx for montipora nudibranchs and the directions say to add 30 drops to 1 gallon of water. I don't need one gallon of water for what I'm doing. Can I make smaller portions? Or if I make a gallon does it have a shelf life? Can I mislead a gallon and use just a bit and put a lid on it?
  8. the 125 has been running about 6 months. I used all the same rock from the 75 to avoid having to cycle too much. As far as fish go, I have a sailfin tang, yellow tang, blue hippo tang, sixline wrasse,4 PJ cardinals, a royal gramma and few blue chromis. I am located in Columbia Md
  9. Hello! My name is Fred and I am new to the forums here at WAMAS. I plan on becoming a full member with my next paycheck, cut me some slack...this hobby is expensive!!! I have about 15 years reptile/amphibian experience, 7 years freshwater cichlids and planted tanks, and about 5 years saltwater experience. I dove into the reef aspects of the hobby with a 20 long with a HOB filter and no skimmer at the start of my saltwater life. I failed miserably. I was adding things I did not need and adding wayyyy too much of it and was overgrown with hair algae in no time! I then aquired a 75 gallon tank with a 25 gallon sump and bought a cheap T5 light. This was fowlr tank with a dwarf lion fish, some cool inverts and a few other fish and it was great. I hadan ich outbreak that wiped everything out due to my lack of experience on how to handle marine ich. a few months later I decided to give it another go(couldn't have an empty 75 gallon in the living room). I purchased a protein skimmer, some reactors for carbon and GFO and some RapidLEDs. Also got a great deal on some dry rock from a member here whom I cannot remember the name. Within 6 months the tank was thriving and I was hooked! I spent(and still do) hours a day researching anything and everything related. I made the mistake of putting a pistol shrimp in that tank with about 4 inches of sand. He would cover anything on the sandbed. It was bittersweet considering I now I had a 6ft 125 gallon in my room. I had recently come into some money so it was perfect timing to set up the 125! Purchased some new Tunze 6095 pumps and an added lighting fixture and I was set! And here I am. The 125 is thriving and doing great! I recently switched out my Rapid LEDs for an ATI 6x80w fixture and I love it! The tank is a mix of softies,LPS and SPS. I am becoming very interested in the SPS Heres just a few pictures.
