(Still don't know what I'm gonna do, though.)
How about adding in some LPS for now, and you can always add SPS later? I know of a guy that can get you a good deal on the best LPS around
-
went for d3300 based on these recommendations:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/recommended-cameras.htm
Ken has the best reviews I have read on cameras and lenses.

Hi Ryan,
I am considering upgrading my DSLR. I have an old D60, and have been looking at getting a D3300.
Adorama has a few refurbished D3300s for $479.
Not sure what Black Friday deals they'll have.
-
Ryan, you are a good friend. Like Professor-X and Magneto! Bazinga!
I dunno, dude...
Water are your water parameters like now? Perhaps you are stripping your corals of nutrients by running too much Carbon/GFO like I was?
As Graham (gws3) told me before with SPS -
If the acros look pale on top and very pale on the bottom they probably need - less light or more nutrients.
If they are dull and darker brown on bottom - more light or less nutrients. -
All right. Deep breath. It sort of pains me to think this way, but after seeing Roni's post about life and SPS not always being compatible, I have decided that I am going to go softies and LPS. I have always loved that swaying tank look. I think it's a good compromise. I also know if I neglect it for a while, it won't crash as hard. With my older kid entering high school and my younger to middle school, things are only gonna get more crazy.
A little support here, guys? (Or am I wussing out?)
It definitely can be done. I have been growing SPS just fine between being gone half the month on average for work, and having a 19 month old running around.
I think a big key to having a successful tank, and a busy life is to make things as automated as possible. You already have a great foundation with your Apex. Dosing pumps, a locker for your skimmate, along with a Swabbie for the neck of your skimmer help tremendously. Once you get things dialed in with consumption rates its really easy.
I say don't give up yet - If you want some frags from my tank to try they are yours.
-
I heard a rumor that this tank is going to be getting wet soon....
-
I still can't figure out if it is reversible. Can you create alternating 6-8hour gyres with the controller, or do you need to buy two pumps? If the latter, do the controllers know how to turn one side on and the other off? I'm considering using these on my tank, but I'll need a minimum of 3 per side unless they are reversible.
According to the user guide a single Gyre pump is capable of creating alternating Gyre's. I'll be receiving my pump later this week when I get back from a trip, and be sure to upload videos and pictures.
Here are some screen shots of the user guide explaining how to use the alternating gyre mode. CoralVue is expected to release a video demonstrating this capability shortly.

Or upgrade...........
Not anytime soon. Will plan on upgrading when we eventually move into a bigger home down the road. Want a fish room with the next tank
-
Probably also knows when Marco gets in all the cool new fish!
I do, but my tank is completely stocked!
Time for me to let things grow out a bit.
-
Great pictures, the tank looks awesome!
I bet you have a few new options on corals now?
You know....with the new job
Thanks!!
And, um, uhhh... no comment

Awesome, Ryan. It's really cool to see the progress after a year. I remember that tank before it had holes
So you think it's the fish and no GFO or is it the lights?
You know, there are some awesome LED tanks out there, and there are some awesome T5 & MH tanks. I believe its more of the fish & no GFO combination that really brought out the colors. Most of the acros were pale looking. It wasn't until I added more fish, and took the GFO offline that I started to see a drastic improvement in color. The corals were still growing, but just bland in color. I think the advantage of T5 over LED is that I don't have any shaded areas anymore, and coral growth looks more "even" to me.
-
Thanks! So what are you nitrates at now? The tank looks amazing Ryan!
Red Sea kit is reading 0.2ppm now. Used to be undetectable.
I haven't tested for PO4 in awhile so I'm not sure what it's at.
-
Tank is looking really great, Brad!
I went to the Academy of Sciences a few years ago, and it was awesome.

Picture update! Broke out the DSLR. Thinking of upgrading it, and getting a Macro lens. These were all taken on a standard 18-55mm
FTS
Tri-Color Acro and Male Pylei Wrasse
Ice Fire Echinata
WWC Pink Passion
WWC Purple Bonsaii
Mini Ricordia garden and Female Pylei Wrasse - Notice her belly isn't so big anymore!
Left side view - Ignore the ghost
Right side - Male Pylei posing, Blue-Green Chromis, One-Spot Foxface, and Green Slimer Acro
The colors on the corals have really come out in the last couple of months. They were nutrient starved with 0 nitrate, and very little phosphate. Solution? I added more fish, and removed GFO. I only run a little carbon now to polish the water, a filter sock, and do a 5% water change once a week.

He's alive!
No worries, Ed. Life happens!
Hope is well with you and your family!

This sentence leads me to believe it's just one prize. The tank, and everything else included. I could be wrong You could always ask on their R2R thread.

I do have an account already. So at what point in the process is the item secured as mine? Post-payment at PayPal? And will other people be able to put the same item in their cart and attempt checkout at the same time?
Sorry for all the questions, but this is very new process. I have a few items I'm looking for and don't want a logistics hiccup to keep me from coral heaven.
We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have!
There is no limit to how many people can put an item in their cart. However, the item is not yours until you complete payment. Be advised that this live sale will also be running on nano-reef so if you see something you really want act quickly!
If anyone else has any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
-
I've registered, but only filled in my billing and shipping addresses. If we don't get the item until checkout is complete, does this mean I have to put in credit card info each time? Or will I be routed to PayPal each time?
You will be routed to pay via PayPal when you check out, but if you have an account already set up (not required, however) with them its extremely fast!
-
Taking a quick breather from uploading products, and getting ready for tomorrow. All I can say is WOW. This will be our best live sale YET! Counted almost 50 fish for sale!
Happy Halloween Everyone... You will be in for a TREAT tomorrow afternoon! You do not want to miss this!!

I didn't see any new products announced. Looks like most of the new stuff was announced earlier this year.
Job well done by the Southern California Marine Aquarium Society (SCMAS).
Look for Reef A Palooza to come to the East Coast next spring in Orlando, FL. April 11-12th 2015.
DSLR's on Black Friday
in General Discussion
I always liked the standard 18-55mm lens. These two pictures were taken in Aspen, Colorado with it on the D60.
LOL! I am with you on getting a macro lens. Was reading this earlier.
