  1. Started in March 2011.

    1. Standard 20g long

    2. ADA 60p and ADA 30c

    3. 36x18x18 rimless, only had it set up for a couple months and then moved.

Moved to California in October of 2013

    4. 18" rimless cube, currently my mangrove tank

    5. 24x16x16 rimless, currently mixed reef tank

    6. 48x18x14 rimless, picking up today. Will combine my two current tanks and turn the 18" cube into a freshwater planted tank

  2.

I feel that. It's nice on that "less is more" philosophy. Hopefully once you get it setup the gears will kick in again, I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Hoping to cancel my afternoon meetings tomorrow and get the tank, if not, Wednesday is wide open.

Do you ever go on nano-reef? Giga, "king of mangroves", just set up a new tank. Ridiculous. He grew this mangrove tree outdoors in freshwater for 4 years, the root system is what I dream of.

I need to setup an outdoor grow.

  3. Roger that - the silencer is on my 'must have' list, and I've got a Sicce 3.0 which is flow adjustable and also easily meets the minimum 528 g/h recommend for the mame overflow per the info on www.saltwater-conversion.com.

One more question if you don't mind (more out of curiosity than concern), do you find that you have to clean it very often?  Given my slight compulsiveness with cleanliness, I have no problem doing frequent, regular cleaning if it's required... am just trying to get an idea of what to expect.

I think I've cleaned it twice in the last year. It probably should be cleaned more often, but there isn't much that sticks into the tank, so I would just shove a paper towel down as far in as I could to make it look a little nicer in the display. Then twice I took it completely apart and soaked it in vinegar.

  4. You got the tank yet? You holding out with some pictures?

Not yet. It was delivered to the trucking terminal but I haven't had a chance to get it. They're only open 9-4 M-F and they're in the east bay, and traffic getting over there is horrible. I have no motivation lol, I hate the east bay.

Sweet. Thanks for the follow up Brad! I was already 95% sold on going with a mame for my 25g Landen when I set it up. Now I'm 100% convinced it's the route I want to go.

Make sure you get the silencer. The return pump is important too, make sure you can control the flow. I have a hydor l40 but I probably have it turned to like 25%.

  5. Got busy with work and traveling back to NJ to visit family and forgot to pay for the rest of the tank until today. Tank will be shipped today, or tomorrow at the latest. It is coming from LA, so it shouldn't take too long to get here.

I've been majorly slacking though, I still have to finish covering all the black foam and finish the stand. Hopefully I can start this on Thursday night and finish over the weekend.

I'm also debating transplanting the mangroves. Right now I have 8 in that 8" cube and I am a little worried about the roots starting to choke each other out. I was thinking of picking my 4 nicest mangroves and replanting them, then acclimating the other 4 for freshwater and planting them outside.

My worry is damaging the roots during a transplant. They've been in the cube for a year now, so I assume the roots are already pretty tangled up. Do I let nature take its course and let the strong mangroves survive, or break open the cube and gently separate them? Decisions....

  6. Bonsainut.com is a great resource. I have a good base for a tree that started ramifying 9 months ago, and is still pliable. I'm working on that to a more traditional bonsai potting, but obviously with much higher water content. I'll grow it inside this winter, but outside in summer. It generally takes a while for a tree to get into shape - the tree is only put into its final display pot once it's finished. I'm putting that to the test with my experiment. Generally with bonsai the easiest way to do that is to put it in the ground and train it there for 5 years - pot growing is much slower (no pun intended). Obviously with mangroves we are limited but you may have great luck in California growing one outside in a very muddy pot, you should give it a shot!

I tired to grow a few mangroves outside but my dog got to them haha. I definitely want to try again though as mangroves do grow so much quicker outside and in freshwater.

  7. Got the tank yet?

It was delivered to SCA yesterday. The original plan was to drive down to LA and pick it up, but the tank came way later than expected and I am pretty much booked every weekend this month. Waiting for them to come back about shipping up here.

Looks like the start of some nice ramification there. I keep a couple of bonsai trees and the concept is the same, selective clipping to develop an interesting branch structure.

Thanks. I really need to get some aluminum wire and start shaping the branches.

  8. Thanks for the inputs. I just got a quote from miracles. I really like the ghost overflows from Reef Savvy, anybody has any experience with those or the beananimal approach? thanks! SCA looks nice too, but their just tanks are really expensive. A 210gal for $4800?? Why? The miracles has starphire glass as well and is custom sized. just curious

SCA should be the least expensive, by far. It shows as $3,000 on their site. It shows it as a "sale" price, but I don't think they actually have sales.

They quoted half the price of Reef Savvy for my basic 48x18x14 with clear silicon and no overflow. Starphire on all 4 sides.

  9.

So any suggestions on a good tank size for an apartment?  60g?

Whatever fits/looks right with the room. My biggest pet peeve is all these oversized tanks I see, but I won't go into that :)
