  1. +1 Scott you need to post more pics.

So it's been 2 weeks and so far so good, my Spath colonies didn't brown out or dying.  I placed them on top with high indirect flow.  Check out below for some colonies shot i took earlier today.

Macro shot of the purple tip - It's so tasty :)

  2. Kinda weird where your Alk went down so much and Cal is still high. From my understanding alk and cal usually move together unless you have a partial nitrogen cycle. Based on the following article.

    http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2002/11/chemistry

"The vast majority of alkalinity depletion in most tanks also comes about by the precipitation of calcium carbonate, as described above. In this process, as alkalinity is depleted by 1 meq/L, calcium will be depleted by 20 ppm. There are some other processes that can lead to alkalinity depletion, including partial cycling of nitrogen (from organic compounds to nitrate and no further) and the incorporation of magnesium into calcium carbonate, but these are generally much less important than calcification."

  3. Wow nice size colony you got there Scott. How long have you had it? Did it brown out on you at first or will you able to keep it original color? What kind light do you have?

    Thanks for sharing

  4. sure, i have a few and they do well so far but i've only had them max two months or so. i've sold a few colony sized pieces to members on here and perhaps they will speak up and they are holding color but again it has been more than a few months max on those. i'll see about getting some photos next time i'm over the tank. they are absolutely gorgeous and coloration is typically very nice and comes in nicely (hardy). i like them because they look like hulked up millepora, haha.

That's awesome I would love to see some of your pictures.  Yes they are huge, it's like they've been on steroids :)

  5. Hope this helps,

    From UniqueCorals care page

Keep this Acropora about 22" under 20k 400 watt Radium metal halide lights. We feed them several times a week with oyster eggs and other meaty, marine-based foods. Water parameters are not overly critical, in our experience. This coral takes a while to acclimate to new environments, so proceed carefully, and allow it time to recover and regain its color after you receive it.

Thanks for sharing that is interesting about feeding oyster eggs. Might have to try that.

  6. So my new addiction is Aussie Acropora Spathulata.  I've tried to google but not much info on these beauties.  Anybody here have experience with these coral that you can share?  I've read they will likely to brown out and much harder to keep than bali millipora.  If you have successful growing these in your tank please share your experience and show off your pictures.

    Happy reefing!

  7. Jack,

If you don't have anything to do this weekend you can make some alk calibration solution and test it with your current test kit, you can do this by using some baking soda and reef calculator. I think this will at least let you know if your test kits are good.

  8. "So I tested my freshly made RC water tonight. As expected, it has an Alk of ~9.5 dkh and a CA of ~ 460 at 1.025. I then tested my tank water for Alk just for sh*ts and giggles and it gave me the same Alk of 5 dkh. So..as much as I wanted my tests to be inaccurate, I think they are."

I've read on few other forums the alk in RC salt suppose to be around 12 dkh, even last year when I was using RC salt i tested the fresh mix and got 12 dkh. So if your test kit is off by 3 then your real alk in the tank is 8 which is the norm. :)

  9. Interesting, my yellow caroliniana is loving life directly under a RadionPro. Color is much better than when it was in low light.

I have a yellow caroliniana too but it was a wild colony. I placed it in the middle at first and burned a few tips, now it's in the bottom of the tank. Is your wild or tank raised?
