You realize these things don't end until 5-6pm on Sunday night. Doubt you will find many people who want to spend a few hours out looking at tanks late on Sunday.
I think this is what was being talked about....nothing like having your idea shot down with the first responder lol

It's pretty easy to get things mixed up in this hobby the first times your reading of it...

This topic has me so confused... I was thinking about buying the BRS dual reactor carbon and gfo, but after reading all this I have no idea what to do...
Running activated carbon in a reactor and carbon dosing are two totally different things.

You are going to get a wide range of responses....i would leave them in. If there are that many it is because you are overfeeding.
My opinion is the population directly correlates with the amount of excess food. Just my opinion though...

At least it isn't 95 degrees like last year....that was the real killer

No power here....tree across a powerline. If vienna/ tysons is going to become part of the metropolis, someone better figure out how to keep the power on during a 15 minute thunderstorm lol

It'll probably be long gone by the time you grab air pumps, but they are important to have on hand for any future events without a doubt.

I dont think this one will be even close to last years. That thing came out of the blue and when it hit, it was devastating from the get go. I remember being in my car at a red light and seeing shopping carts and street signs flying through the intersection within 5 minutes of the first hint of bad weather. I thought for sure a tornado was comin through fairfax.

This will go down and yet another over-hyped DC area storms..... Don't spend too much time prepping, but be prepared I guess just in case.
Over hyped DC area storms?? Whens that ever happen? lol.
I sure hope you're right, but I'll take the prepared route.

After losing power for 7 days last summer and crashing my 55g tank, definitely not going to get fooled twice lol

Just picked up my generator and a bunch of 5g gas cans....

Your choice of adult beverAges and ice is always important. You can also use the ice in bags to help keep the temp down if it becomes an issue.
Very well said lol.
You can go a couple days with battery powered air pumps and a bunch of ice in the summertime....

Anyone remember the "derecho" from last summer, and a week without power after what seemed like the end of the world had arrived?
Looks like we may have another surprise storm coming through late tonight and tomorrow.....get your reef survival stuff prepared, the forecast does not look pretty....

Ill have to post an update soon(meaning pics)....after a long 3 month battle, nitrates and phosphates are undetectable. Still going skimmerless. For 2-2.5 months I couldnt get the PO4 level to drop below .2. Over the last 3 weeks it dropped like a bomb keeping up the same regiment. Wasn't very good for the torches and frogspawn, but my birdsnest which was nearly 100% dead has all the green polyps back and i can see weekly improvement. There were some parts that changed to live rock color, and those parts are not back and i dont expect they will be.
Now I am trying to stabilize everything (alk, po4, ca) and cut back my photo period. I was running all 6 bulbs for 6 hours and the 2 blue plus for 10 hrs. Im noticing a little bleaching on my monti frag and I'm pretty sure its because of too much light and undetectable nutrient levels. Going to cut back to 7 hours on the 2 bulbs and 5 hours going full blast and see how things respond over the next month.
Pumped.

Small pieces can definitely break off and get sucked in pumps.

Anyone know of any reef sites doing a memorial day sale? I figured I would see some sales by now and have a list of items I need to get, hopefully at a little discount....

Not at all what I expected to see either...

Received my Lanthanum Chloride today.
4oz. bottle of agent green. Ordered from Big Als on line. Still waiting on 10 micron filter socks.
My phosphates are at .56. Hoping to use LC temporarily then switching to GFO.
Definitely keep us posted! You are way more on top of this than me!
Basser--is a skimmer a must when dosing this stuff, or would I be OK just doing your 100/10/1 micron sock setup? I have a skimmer but need to switch out sumps and re-plumb everything before it will be hooked up and running....

Post up where you find the socks and other things. I suspect there are a group of people here who would go in on a GB to assemble a Lanthanum Chloride "kit".
Definitely a good idea, I'll make sure to post where to get things

I'm looking for it to! Let me know what you find.
I went to Leslie's Pool Supply in Vienna, VA and they carry the product PhosFree which is a combination of Lanthanum Carbonate and Lanthanum Sulfate if my internet searching is correct. I have read many pool supply stores no longer carry SeaKlear but PhosFree instead. A bunch of people have been using it with success, it is just more diluted than the SeaKlear which is what people were previously using
The Seakleer bottle requires a 1:10000 dilution I believe. Put that into context in a small reef tank means you use very little if dosing by the instructions for a pool. I have some myself, but I've only ever used it to age my old dry rock, so I wasn't concerned about the dosing.
It is definitely important to dilute it heavily. From what I have read, PhosFree is about 5x more diluted than the SeaKlear so it does not need quite as much rodi water mixed in, but obviously still needs a lot.
I need to figure out where I can get these 10 micron filter socks they talk about on the RC thread on this topic...

Thanks Tom. I will need to do some more reading before using it, but I plan in diluting it quite a bit and take it slow at first and see how things respond.
I found that article and its got some great info....
