  2. So, I just got off the phone with Inspector Aziz of the US Fish and Wildlife Service at the Valley Stream, NY office.

I was told that it is the stony corals that are the real issue, not zoanthids.

Inspector Aziz, said that as long as the specific zoanthid was not on a list that Japan is not letting leave the country, there should be no issue with getting them into the U.S.

I was told that the base that the zoos are mounted will make a difference though. if they are sent mounted on rock, it would have to be checked out to make sure it didn't have any type of stony corals also growing on it. If the mounting was on a man made disc, then there was no issue.

I was given instructions on how to apply for an import permit and was told that there would be a permitfee of about $145 each shipment.

  3. nooby,

When a site like MASNA posted an article that says Japanese corals are illegal people asked questions as to where the corals a local vendor is selling came from and why they are labeled as they are. You posted that they can be imported legally yet you showed no evidence of that, only proof that Japan is an importer.

You're quoting the wrong person...i never posted anything about legal importation.

I do however work for a government agency that deals with the importation of good into the U.S.

I will bite the bullet and try to call someone and see what kind of answer I can get.

  4. I ran into the same thing Tom. I figure that it's just safer and more responsible to buy propigated stuff, like what Justin sells.

Which is a good point, and good conservation effort.

But did you notice, that without any ability to offer the laws and regulations, some people were quite quick to make some comments aimed at the character of another person.

I think some people get too bored and need a witch hunt to keep them occupied

  5. I see a local LFS selling "Japanese" zoanthids right now. They post here too. If this is truly illegal, why do they sell them? Can they prove the chain of custody/ country of origin? Are they simply lying to promote sales?

I like how easily people start to say someone is lying.

How many people are in the chain before the store gets them? If everyone in the supply chain calls them Japanese, then it would be natural that the end person calls them Japanese too.

Also, he did not say that they were from Japan,he used the name that many suppliers are using for that group of zoanthids.

All those lying U.S. based Irish wolfhound breeders...cause none of them are being born in Ireland.

I guess evey Mexican restaurant is lying about it's food, cause none of it was flown in from Mexico.

Who cares if the name doesn't match the origin as long as the product is good.

And he isn't charging high prices for the name. The frag pack advertised on this site was way cheeper than any zoanthids I have seen in other LFS. I don't think that $2 per zoo is someone making big money on false advertising.

  6. Interesting thought, you I would think that you would need to have some type of metal tube for inside of the fridge because I don't think plastic tubing would transfer enough cold to the water running through it. Unfortunately I don't know what if any type of metal tubing would be saltwater safe, lacking that the thinnest plastic tubing you could find would be best.

Got me thinking though, wonder if I can find a cheap mini fridge somewhere...

I think the only metal that is really "reef safe" is titanium. They sell titanium tubing, but it isn't cheep.

Instead of a dorm fridge, maybe a used mini freezer might be cold enought to be usable with plastic tubing.

  7. Was wondering if this idea might work for a DIY chiller.

    Any input would be appreciated.

I was thinking of taking one of those smill refrigerators, the size advertized for dorm rooms, and modifying it. The idea is to cut 2 holes in the side and then run 3/4 or 1 inch aquarium tubing through it.

There would be a loop of about 15-20 feet of tube inside the fridge. The pump moving the water would be very low flow, to make sure the water had a decent amount of time to cool.

Does this sound like something that would work?

  8. My MC/PC bulbs only have a couple months on them, so I figure I can take my time building a new LED lighting rig and have it ready by the time new bulbs are needed. Just need to start reading up on all the DIY articles.

  9. When I view this poll all the pictures are reduced to 0.25" thumbnails. Is this just me? It's cumbersome for people to click on every photo to enlarge.

I looked at some of the old polls and they are the same way.

One of the site gurus will have to tell me what needs to be changed.
