  1. I love the simplicity of your tank and all the negative space where you can really see all the fish swimming together. On a somewhat related note, where do all the fish sleep? Do you find that not having a lot of hiding places causes stress for some of the fish?

  2. Hi - I don’t know many people here very well, but looking for one person to help me move/lift a tank and stand onto my truck in north McLean near Cooper Middle School midday this Saturday 4/29. I’m getting back into the hobby and purchasing a 70g tank that’s currently set up. I plan on breaking the set up down in the morning and the only part when I’ll need help is lifting the tank and stand onto the truck bed. I’m thinking the loading part will be a 10 minute exercise and I plan on renting the WAMAS suction cups to make lifting the tank between the two of us easier. Anyone in that area think they’ll have some time that day to help a fellow reefing addict out? Please let me know. Thanks in advance!

  3. Thanks to both of you for the suggestions and tips. I think your responses rule out bone cutter a) because I don’t want any chance of crushing the skeleton, but also b) the heads of the frogspawn are each really thick (ie I’ve seen euphyllia that are thin where they can almost just break off accidentally but these branches/heads are thick). Haven’t decided what to do yet but if/when the time comes, sounds like dremel is the way to go.

  4. I’m thinking about fragging a couple heads off of my gold frogspawn colony but have never tried fragging any type of branching LPS before. For those that have experience with this, what do you find to be the best method/tool to do this? Band saw? Any tips? Little nervous to even try this for obvious reasons. Thanks.

  5. I believe fairfax county uses chloramines in their water. There are specific carbon blocks that remove chloramines in particular. However, if my current RODI unit is putting out water that has 0 TDS, does that mean the chloramines have been removed? Or are chloramines something that is not counted in TDS? I’m assuming the former but thought I’d ask. Thanks!

  6. Does anyone have experience with the Eshopps Eclipse Overflow? Based on the way the bulkhead is attached looking at pictures, is the bulkhead somehow pre-built into the wetside overflow box? And if so, is it not possible to replace the bulkhead? I'm asking because I am thinking about using this overflow on a tank with 1" thick acrylic, and if it only comes with one size bulkhead, this overflow may not work on thicker tanks?

  7. My intention was never to throw anyone under the bus. I was simply asking if anyone knew where he was because his responses to me were always very prompt, but then they started to fall off. It wasn't until others responded that I realized the facts they laid out were exactly the same as my experience. My communication to him has always been cordial, patient and understanding. Like gioNVA, I waited for over 6 months and never received a product. There's really nothing more to this story.

I would love for him to deliver on his promise and would still be willing to take delivery.

  8. I gave up on him.  He promised to make me a sump and it would be ready by two weeks.  Then had an excuse of white pvc sheets not available and it will be another two weeks so he can order them.  After another two weeks, he said still no pvc so I said make it in gray (he said he had it available) and the sump would be done.  Waited another few weeks and then he stopped responding.  Basically just wasted about two months waiting for a sump to be made.  Hopefully things are ok with him as we need local builders but I wouldn't recommend him based on my experience.

This has been my exact same experience, except I've been waiting for 6 months. It's not like I was in any rush, but I would check in every two weeks or so and at least get a response (even if the content of the response never came to fruition). I haven't gotten a response to a few texts in the past month or so, so I figured I'd check with others to see if they've been in contact and know his whereabouts.

  9. I've always just rinsed everything I clean in vinegar and then put it right back in use. Even after a soak.

Nope. I just rinse it out with the hose, dry it with some paper towels and fill it up with some saltwater.

    No worries.

Glad to see your getting back in.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure. =)

Hey Eric, thanks man. I've been dabbling with the idea of getting back in for a while, but this time I'm all in. Got a tank and stand. Now just need everything else. Lol.

I figured it was time because people would see me constantly scrolling through the "fish club forums" and then ask me "why? you don't even have a fish tank!"

  10. I apologize if I came off a little abrasive. (Human sand paper lol) it's just sickening. One kid PM'd me I wanted to buy something from him he's like I don't know 12. He told me one guys been bugging him for his item for half price. (The one who sells free stuff ain't dropping names) And he might do it unless I beat his price.

Why does that bother you unless you were trying to get whatever he was selling for even less than half price? If that's the case, and that's what it sounds like, aren't you guilty of exactly the same thing, i.e. bugging some kid to sell you something for less than half price? Otherwise, why not just beat the other guy's half price offer?

  11. As others have mentioned, stick with the 3/4" as the main and 1" as the emergency. The 3/4" duly open at siphon will handle almost 1,000 gph. If you have a 1,000 gph return pump, it will flow a lot less than that after head loss. Oversize the return plumbing to reduce head loss (e.g. if the return pump has a 3/4" outlet, use a bushel to increase to 1" for a majority of the run then reduce back to 3/4" into the tank). IMO, the main advantage of using the 1" drain as the emergency is that it adds an extra safety net in case the main gets clogged. With a herbie, you will need to have a trickle going down the emergency to keep a steady water level. That "trickle" uses up some of the flow capacity of the emergency drain, so if the main and emergency were the same size (and the main siphon were fully open), you run the risk of flooding if the main were to get fully clogged. This is where the bean animal was invented to have an extra emergency drain to account for this. So in summary, 3/4" main, 1" emergency, oversize the return, all the plumbing does not need to be the same size.
