  1. You'r awesome!

Not really - the guys that take the time to do give back to the local community are the ones that deserve the credit. That is one part of WAMAS I really like.

Just doing my part to help out. I tried to add some variety and color since I know that is what most non-reefers like to see.

  2. Last one was our winter meeting. We alternate meetings between VA and MD, with the occasional DC/NADC meeting in there. This one had to come back to VA due to SATs on that day at most high schools in MD. Fragfest has been in McLean with Chip running it @ his church.

Who has some cheapo zoos for me (other than green) to put in the school tank? $5-$10 range?

Doug, I have some I can donate. I'll see if the guy that is coming up tomorrow can take them with him. That and the books.

  3. I've found that putting mine in a rock that has a "hole" or is hollowed out for its foot, makes for a good home. I have had 4 different nem's and none of them have never took a walk-a-bout. I might just be lucky though. It seems like if they have their foot secured in a "hole" where they nothing can get to them, they stay put. Of course with low-med flow and good light.

I also have had to cut them up ~ every 6 months or so. They seem pretty resilient, as I have only lost one. I'd be willing to bet it'll be fine once it finds a new home it likes. You could also make him a "home" in a rock and put it in there and see what happens.

I'll have to get a picture one of these days of the rock I have for my nem' so people can see where mine likes it best.

    Good luck

  4. +1 on all of the above. It'll be fine. If it is possible to tilt it, I'd do that just to feel better, but it will do it on its own if it needs to. (as long as it was healthy to begin with)

  5. The tank is looking awesome!

I would LOVE to have an 8ft tank. I love the longer run tanks so you can watch the fish really swim!

I know what you mean about the pics and realizing the hair is a little thinner than you "think" :) - I still think I'm 20!

I'll have to take a look at he site you listed for the black flex pvc. I'm the same way, if I know it is there and I'm not happy with it, I'll fix it. I like the look of a nice clean, finished looking setup. I painted my pvc with black krylon fusion just for that reason.

    Awesome job!

Can you post some info on the "silent" drains your using.

  6. The return pump I have is setup so its only job is to "return" water. With that being said, I like to have ~500gph going through the sump skimmer section, then a ball valve for the fuge, which gets ~50gph or less through it.

I plan on setting my new tank up the same way as my current one, since I am happy with the results/design thus far.

I have a plenum that my return pump goes through to supply my reactors.

  7. Closed loops are more a thing of the past I would think. Especially if you already have vortecs. There is no drilling, no possible leaks, less power, more flow options, ease of maintainance, ect.

I like the clean look of the vortecs vs. any other pump or closed loop out there. Although I will probably be using 2 vortecs and 2 tunze's on my new tank, just because the vortecs can't be angled and it is a 6ft tank. On a 4ft I would use two-three and be very happy with the flow. Especially with the options available on the ecosmart ones.

  8. You could do exactly like mine. I use 3) PAR38 bulbs from nanotuners and I have excellent light penetration all the way to the bottom of my 24" deep tank. 3 bulbs will set you back about 300 plus you have to make your own light fixture from Home Depot or use a chandelier or any other king of household light fixture. They run on regular 110v current and are truly "plug and play".

Check out my lights on the dedicated tank forum under "60 cube".

Charlie - I think a lot of it depends on the amount you are willing to spend, and the desired "look" you are going after.

Zygote - Doesn't it look kind of funny with them being more like spotlights? From the video you showed, the spotlight effect looked really pronounced and kind of awkward. I'm wondering if it looks that way in person, or if it is from being on video, or one or more of the lights being off.

  9. is that a leopard wrasse jouvie, he is great as is the other, Rockwork will be nice as well. definately watching this build carefully, we may actually be up your way this saturday, we have a horse running in hunt valley (psudo race mroe of a warm up for the horse) as long as the baby doesnt come.

You must be getting excited for this to come, you have had alot of things to be excited/wait for lately

    keep dem pics comin

Yep, he's a tiny Leopard. I picked him up for that reason, since he should be easier to train to eat frozen/flake. So far he is eating flake on his first day, and he only hid for about an hour when I dropped in some brine with a net. He didn't like the noise.

I'll be down in Williamsburg, VA for a National with my MC club. Otherwise I'd invite you over.

I have so many things going on right now it is crazy. I'll be happy when everything is finished and I can settle down and enjoy it. That probably won't happen since I am back to finishing up the last year of my degree too. I should have done this stuff in my 20's!!!

  10. which wall is the tank going on. I see sooo many places that the 300DD Marineland tank would fit.

and I just saw on Marine Scene's post they are selling the following...

An acrylic 600 gallon tank with dimensions of 9'x3'x3' and has dual overflows in the back corners is up for $2000.

    on the possibilities

Manageable size, and aestetics are more important to me. With aestetics being at the top of the list.

I'm probably going to order the tank through Fins and Feathers - Sean knows his stuff down there and is great to deal with.

Here is the cad on the rear glass drilling -

  11. I forget how large of a tank you went with, but I have 5 emerald crabs in my tank and they keep it completely at bay.

I think if you just give it a little time they will take care of it.

    +1

That is what I did - along with the other suggestions about manual removal and nutrient export.

  12. My old maroon clown was like that. She loved to be rubbed and held. I could even pull her out of the water, then set her back in and she wouldn't move out of my hand. Definitely one of the most interesting fish I have had.

I have a flame wrasse that loves to swim through my hands when I am in the tank.

I'm sure if I spent more time in the tank with my hands, they would probably be more keen on being touched, but as it is I use my tongs most of the time.
