  1. Sorry for the highjack, but whats the cheapest place you've found for the pro units?

I got mine from Dr. Fosters and Smith. They were a good price to begin with, but I also use a site called mrrebates.com, and will be getting 10% cash back as well.

  2. The legs are very very solid on the pro...they run the whole width of the fixture and can adjust in and out on a slider rail. I really like my pro, although I FUBARd some of my corals with the extra light.

It does not really have individual reflectors. It's one big reflector, but it is bent around each lamp.

The fans are MUCH quieter than on the old 4-lamp model, and are on the same power cord as the lamps (saving two electrical outlets)

  3. I've kept media in there practically since I've had it. I have an older model though, where the return pipe goes almost all the way to the bottom of the chamber.

Sounds like you had a really rotten day! Be careful on that ice outside!!!

  4. Funny you say that, Bob. I had planned to take some photos yesterday, but came home to the tank looking like pure H-E-double hocky sticks, and the skimmer about to overflow (had just emptied it out earlier in the morning when I did my weekly water change).

Still haven't figured out what in the heck happened, but suspect it was adding re-charged purigen back into the system. I'd tried once before to recharge it and the tank reacted badly (thought it may have been a cause for losing my candy canes), so I assumed I hadn't gotten all of the chlorine out. I recharged it once again, doubling up on the prime dechlorinator dosage and the length of time it was in there, soaking it for another whole day in RO/DI just to be safe.

Zero clues based on my water chemistry tests yesterday either.

    Here were the symptoms:

-ALL mushrooms in the tank were shriveled up (with the exception of the ricorea, which all looked perfectly normal)

    - Kenya Tree and Xenia were all slouched over and miserable looking

    - most zoa polyps closed

    - GSP was very "thin", but the polyps that were out were completely extended...just that about half the colony hadn't opened at all, but not in any one area

    - SPS all had full PE and looked completely normal

    - fish all fine and acting normal

    - Snails motoring around just fine

    - Anemone perfectly normal

Today, about 24 hours after removing the Purigen

-Xenia, Kenya Tree and GSP back to normal

    - SPS still all normal

    - Zoas are more open, but some colonies still closed, and others partly closed...some more than others

    - Mushrooms are about 1/3 of their usual selves, if that

    - Skimmer production back to normal

    - Fish, Snails, Anemone all normal

I am totally stumped! I mean...what irritates the hardiest corals in the tank (mushrooms and zoas) and doesn't affect the SPS and anemone at all????

  5. I wouldn't hesitate to shop at any of those three (MS, BRK, F&F) and DO. :) You can find quality goods and livestock at all three, and while prices range across the board, equally good deals as well.

There is another shop in Leesburg (can't remember the name). I was only in there once and was not overly impressed.

    3. Yes I know that the tang is SUPPOSED to be in a bigger tank and as I have told many others, It is doing great right now and if it gets to big or if I notice that it is having troubles I will gladly rehome it to a bigger aquarium.

    Josh,

It only becomes a matter of "IF" because the fish could very well die from stress before it gets too big for the tank. It WILL get too big for the tank if it survives, and as Raf said, that will happen sooner rather than later. As attached as you are to that fish now, imagine how hard it will be to give him up two or three months from now.

That's all we are trying to say. Seriously, I am not normally the fish police....but this is a bad situation for both you and that hippo, whether you want to agree with it or not.

  7. Josh,

Clownfish host in all sorts of stuff that isn't "natural" for them.

    Carpet anemones are "expert only"

The BTA will be enough of a challenge to keep with your current set up.

My clowns took 6 weeks before they found my anemone.

  8. (updated with pics)

I have a couple things for trade at the meeting and will post pics tonight.

    - large fist sized zoa combo rock: watermelons, plain green zoas, and yellow polyps

    gallery_1752_4_44613.jpg

    - small frag of the infamous blue xenia :) (it just laid down a new glob/feeler a few days ago...should have hands by the meeting). It is being kept in both low light and low flow, so will arrive to you very blue. (not as blue in the pic as it is in the tank). This pic is of momma and baby....as you can see, hands are already forming.

Not sure what I want/need besides maybe some sort of sea fan or gorgonian to hide my skimmer pump (something that doesn't have to be rooted in the sand). PM me with offers.

  10. Just trying to be helpful, Josh. You've already experienced ich and adding a hippo is only likely to exacerbate the problem...let alone with limited rock, no skimmer, and a messy (yet sensitive, ich-prone) fish.

Things don't occur in isolation in a reef tank....problems build on themselves, and you may be building toward some big ones which I am trying to help you avoid.

  11. Alright darlin'....what is that blue hippo tang doing in there? You've been doing a great job asking questions on the forum, but I don't remember seeing this one come up.

He may be tiny now, but they don't call it a "hippo" for nothing. I've never considered myself the Tang Police, but with the limited LR and a fast growing messy fish, this will lead to problems that you just don't need.

Also, you need a clam person to chime in and give you some advice on yours. It's not looking very happy.

  12. I've heard this phenomenon too...almost like in the smaller tank, they were too crowded to fight. Now they have a big huge territory and the purple one WANTS it.

Have you tried hanging a small mirror on the tank? I hear this is a good way to re-direct tang aggression (as the purple will go after his alter ego in the mirror and leave the yellow one alone)
