  1. When I lost a clown and added a juvie, he was the one to find the anemone too, and the resident female followed.

I wonder if adding a juvie to an established tank helps them seek out/host in the anemone more quickly.... for protection from all of the "bully" fish.

  2. Got the anthias from f&f. They had 4 at one time. I bought the last one. Just let me know when you plan on stopping by.

Ratz! I was just there last week and didn't see any. Will ask Sean to call me if he gets more.

How is it doing? I worry that I don't feed my fish enough for an anthias, but of course...could change that if I got one. Is it okay to have just one of them?

Sean does such a great job QT'ing and making sure the fish are eating properly. Everyone talks about how difficult it is to keep Potter's Angels, but the one I got from him has been going strong for....hmmmm.... a year and a half now.

  3. I'm going to suggest, in addition to regular water changes and siphoning what you can, that you reposition those koralias. You can't just "point" them at the problem like you can with a maxijet...the flow is too dispersed. Here's what you need to do:

-move them much higher in the tank (mine are at about the top 1/3 mark of the tank). The surface of the tank should look like it is on a slow, rolling boil.

-position them so that they are pointing toward the surface of the water, toward each other, and toward the front glass, all at the same time.

This produces maximum dispersion of the flow, and a very strong downward current. Have any doubts? Put a chunk of gsp or something down on the sand, and see what happens as you reposition the powerheads.

The increased air exchange and better overall flow will help eradicate the cyano. I haven't had any since I got my koralias positioned properly.

Oh, and I take those flow/guard things off too.

    Good luck,

    Tracy

  4. Thanks for all the suggestions. Wanted to let you know that the breeder net workedd. After keeping the yellow tang isolated for a few days, everything worked out when I reintroduced him to the tank. No more tang fights....

Nothing like a good old fishy "time out" to restore law and order! :)

  5. Years ago, before I got into this hobby myself, I set up a "nemo" tank for my nephew/godson. Little Nemo and Dory (a blue damsel) lived for years, in a little boy's room, without too much maintenance. They may have lived longer than 5-6 years if any of us knew what we were doing. Heck.... "serious" hobbyists go through fish more rapidly. I've certainly lost more than two fish in a much shorter timeframe. :)

It was a 10g set up with whatever standard hood/light came with it, sand, and a biowheel filter. It even had (gasp) a plastic martian-like little cave, which was replaced over the years with a shipwreck, shark head, etc.... (whenever it got too yucky for my sister in law to want to clean it) LOL Heck, I use PVC tubes in my QT....a plastic shark head is more interesting. LOL

We added a few snails and hermits for clean up and added interest.

Then, when you have the resources to really launch into the hobby, you can just use the 10G for a QT.

  6. Thanks all! The green monti though is starting to cause problems. It's about 8" across and is shading everything under it. It is firmly encrusted on an 18" piece of tonga branch. It would be a shame to frag it, as it is so big and perfect, but I have no idea who would want such a huge thing, or how they could ever transport it.

I'll have to work this out somehow, before it fills in the whole top of the tank! LOL

  7. I never saw him get bullied by any fish and i have a 2 inch eurobrace around my tank. Guess i need to put some egg crate on the back. The fish did swim near the surface at night so maybe i scared him when i let my dog out in the morning

I had a clownfish "twitch" itself out of the tank at night....sleeping up in the corner.

Once they began hosting in the anemone though...hasn't happened since.

So sorry for your loss, though...that's a real bummer!

Maybe LFSs can start selling "hosting Picassos" and their anemones for even bigger bucks! :)

  8. Anthony was suggesting at the time that you could just mix up a kalk slurry and just throw it in a high flow area all at once as a daily ritual and that things would be fine.

For all that trouble, what would be the advantage over a simple morning dose of two-part?

  9. I finally got a "real" camera! Tracy, I thought you fell off the earth.... been wondering what happened to you.

I looked at your tank thread and saw the awesome pics....fantastic!

I did kind of fall off the earth. The (now-not-so) little black @$%#& invasion proved to be quite a busy bee and needing a great deal of attention. She's awfully pretty though, so she's forgiven! LOL

  10. Steve,

Yep....remora pro, and cpr hob fuge on a reverse light schedule.

You'll see that the kenya tree (although shriveled in the pic) is still going strong, and that little piece of pulsing xenia on the LR I bought from you is an entire colony now.

Who'd have thunk when I came and bought this tank and LR from you that it would turn out this nice, huh? LOL I really do love it!!

  11. Well, it's been a long long time since I've updated this thread. Tank is still going, in spite of great laziness on my part.

You will see that I've got a patch of turf algae in the center/right, and that all of the gorgeous purple coralline on the back wall is now gone. That's what you get when a new puppy comes into the house and you get lazy with water changes. The green monti and brown monti digi have obviously been sucking up all of the calcium that does find its way into the tank. I'll have to link to my last FTS somehow so people can see side-by-side how they've grown.

The Royal Gramma became a fish chip after carpet surfing some time ago, and the saddest news of all....Spot, while not discovered on the rug, disappeared one day never to be seen again. His disappearance may have been one reason I got a bit lazy with the tank. I can hardly bear to take care of it sometimes, without his comical little presence. One of these days, I'll have to get a new one.

Anyway, without further ado...here she is:

edit: wow, hard to believe that this was the most recent prior FTS. Over a year ago....really??!! Wow how time flies! Hmmm, seems like the tank has really grown into itself, huh?

  12. I do believe my tank has initially cycled. I have heard some pushback on this and have seen many recommendations to wait 6 weeks at least before adding anything live to the tank,

Sounds like you've been hanging over at Reef Central. Watch out for some dude named Demon who recommends that anything less than two Koralia 4's will be inadequate flow for your tank. ROFL

Love the rock and the nice open aquascape, and I bet the goby/shrimp will be lots of fun to watch.

Welcome, and just remember to have fun and enjoy!! :)

  13. I'm so bummed to have missed it. Was striken with that bug that's been going around. YUCK!

I thought I'd avoided it, but no such luck.

I have a light here that I was supposed to bring for Doug/Dave/school tank donation. Maybe we can arrange to meet elsewhere. Just send me a PM.
