    Looking for advice on keeping Wartskin Frogfish

    Hey there!  I love my frogfish but so far I have not had luck weaning my guy onto frozen (~3 months), I understand that some frogfish may never take to frozen so it is ok. In terms of diet, I feed mine gut loaded live ghost shrimp once every day or every other day depending on size, and a small damsel every three or four weeks.  Frogfish seems to have a reputation of not lasting more than one year in our tank, some people attribute it to improper diet so I am hoping the introduction of saltwater fish in it's diet would help. At the same time I will continue to try and wean my guy onto frozen for a larger variety.

     

    For filtration, I have some MarinePure spheres and a Hydor Nano Skimmer in my 17g tank, while it does pull out some gunk, for the most part it is not very effective. I would recommend looking into a Tunze if your tank could fit one, or rely on mechanical filtration and water changes.  I sometimes add a filter pad temporarily if I see too much detritus.

     

    If you can keep up with the frogfish's diet, keeping the little guy is pretty straight forward. Please let me know if you have any question, while I have not kept mine for long, I would  be happy to share what I have learned so far!

    Thanks for the shout-out Tom and thank you and the WAMAS officers for putting together this Frag Fest, WAMAS meetings have always been top-notch.  :cool: I ordered a Triton test kit from UnqiueCorals today, let's see if this could help shed some light on the "Uh-oh" happening in my tank...

    That's actually a very interesting idea, I can see it working. Black egg crate may look the best and there is a sand trap / lid on the top portion of the dropoff that could help anchor the egg crate in.  The egg crate could double as anchoring spots for corals frags for either the frag tank side or sea horse side.  Added benefit is you could feed your frags up stream and anything the coral miss would flow into the sea horse side as food. 

     

    Looking at my own 17g dropoff (Artfully Acrylic), the flow at the top is pretty strong and the bottom portion has very low flow, I think even without the egg crate your sea horses may just prefer to stay at the bottom portion most of the time, especially if most of the hitching posts are at the bottom. Pure speculation on my part though.

    4/22-10/20 Zoa Challenge Updates and Results

    My 45g tank has a Radion G3 light on for 6 hrs a day, 15g sump running SWC skimmer & media reactor with GFO. I sometimes put in a filter sock temporarily if I fed heavily. Water current produced by Jebao DCT return pump, Gyre 130 xf130 (half side), small Jebao power head behind the rock works. Every 3 days I feed the tank heavily with a mix of frozen, every day I feed a small amount of flake. I believe this 45g is quite nutrient rich (aka dirty).

     

    In terms of target feeding zoas & pals, I only target feed my SunnyDs because the polyps actively grab food, the other paly / zoa seems to ignore the food so I don't target feed them. I have bottle of Reef Chili, Coral Frenzy, Reef-Roids sitting around so I plan to experiment with all of them to see if the FangBanger responds to anything.

     

    Thanks for setting up this grow-out challenge, looking forward to see how this zoa reacts to the different environment.

    What a great meeting!

    It was another fantastic meeting and I am not saying it just because I won one of the jellyfish tanks (thanks again Jellyfish Art + WAMAS!).  :laugh:

     

    I remember talking to the LAS students last year and thought their goals were very ambitious, almost too ambitious. I was floored by the progress within just a few months. Extremely impressive and makes me wonder what I am doing with my life.

     

    Chuck Norris's nephew Jon from Jellyfish Art was fantastic - very relatable and engaging. I learned a lot of valuable information about the current state of jellyfish keeping.  Overall another great meeting, thanks WAMAS!  :thumbsup:
