  1. I just noticed that my protein skimmer stopped making foam for the past few days. The pump is making bubbles in the skimmer but the bubbles are not producing any foam. It's been working great until now. I've taken out the pump and cleaned it and make sure the impeller was intact. The red nipple gets stuck in the pump and doesn't remain on the shaft. I've tried adjusting the open/close valve and that just decreased the water level but no foaming action. My skimmer sits on 8-9" water. I've tried it in 10" of water for a day and that didn't work. I tried repositioning the pump so the water intake is from the bottom, then tried the top without success. Any suggestions?
  2. I know this is an old post but I have a lemon peel angel. She is quite nice, named her Mimi from Drew Carry Show. Haha. I have a few SPS, mushrooms, star polyps and she seems to leave all of them alone. It may have been a coincidence but once I added her, my aptasias were all gone. She likes to nibble on the rocks and but I have not seen her nibble on my SPS. I feed often because I have a blue hippo I want to keep healthy. I have a damsel and a hawkfish and the angel seems to get into it with them but no physical contract. Hope that helps.
  3. Thanks for asking! Unfortunately, I have not been able to catch him. I've tried to catch him while he's feeding, tried the clear plastic bottles and while the lights are off. I will be re-aquascaping in a few days, I will catch him when he has no place to hide between the rocks. Meanwhile, I'm feeding him more often, some soaked in selcon. Nori always available during the day. I do think it's HLLE and my water params are not good. I usually do 10-15gal water change every other week. 15gal water change on 4/11/09 Water param 4/12/09 Nitrate 20 Nitrite 0.1-0.25 Ammonia 0.25 I will con't to do water changes every few days until my water params are acceptable. I use RO/DI water. Do you think 15 gallons is enough every 2-3 days?
  4. Funny you mentioned about flatworms. I've had a problem with that and still do. I manually sucked up many as I could everyday for 5 days and than used flatworm exit and than repeated after one week. There's significant improvement but I still see some. Should I do the flatworm exit again? The only quarantine tank is a 10 gallon. Boo. What should I do?
  5. I've seen ich before and this looks different. Can it appear like this? I do not have a grounding probe. Whether it's ich, parasites, fungal, can it affect only one fish?
  6. For the past month my hippo has been looking terrible. I'm not sure if this is HLLE as the white spots are practically everywhere and I'm doubtful that its ich. I haven't seen him scratch on rocks. There were only a few white spots and now there are too many to count. Its eating fine and seems happy otherwise. I'm feeing twice daily, mixture of: Spectrum Thera A pellets, Prime Reef, Formula One, Nori sheets, Red Algae. I'm not sure these are self inflicting wounds, he likes to get into crevices between the rocks. He is not getting bullied. All your input would be very much appreciated. I have garlic extreme but have not tried it yet.
  7. John, I currently have 2 aqua blue and 2 actinic+. Are 4 bulbs enough? I plan on having more SPS and would like placement options except the top. I have a few acroporas that I've purchased from BRK a few months ago. I've placed all of them at the top and two are growing slowly but the third is not thriving as I had expected. I'm not sure if it needs more intense lighting. Its getting close for me to replace the bulbs and I was considering adding on MH. Is this the system you were talking about? Please send me a link if incorrect. http://www.sunlightsupply.com/aqua/product...mp;type=product If you recommend a new lighting system, is there a way to rearrange my T5 so I can add on 2 MH onto the hood? And, most importantly, can I bring the hood into BRK and have someone install it? Haha. Can you let me know when you will have more fighting conchs? The one I had for 4 years died. SAD! Jessica
  8. I need a suggestion. I have 4 T5 lights attached to my canopy in my 90 gal, 24" deep tank. Its time to switch the bulbs out but I was curious to know if I should change my lighting system entirely. I would like to keep some SPS corals. Will the four T5 be enough? I am interested in getting a combination of metal halides with T5s. What kind of set up can you order me? Will I be able to use the hood with the new set up? Jessica
  9. Hi, I have the red sea wavemaker and I do like it. I used it with 4 maxijets (modded). Problems I had were with the maxijets. One of then were plugged in and I never turned it off. The other 3 were connected to the wavemaker and it gave me problems. I guess they do not last long becuase it was constantly being turned off and on. Sometimes it will not turn on, other times it will spin backwards. Perhaps another type of powerhead should be used or a maxi jet that is not modded. The powerhead that was alway on lasted about 1 year until the metal broke. Hope this helps.
  10. I purchased 2 piggy backs for my 4 stage ro/di but the store didn't send any diagrams or instructions on how to install both. Can anyone help me? System is a AquaFx ro/di unit. I found instructions on how to install only 1 system, not two. Thanks!
  11. Red sea for ph and alkalinity Rest of the test kit is from aquarium pharmaceuticals
  12. I recommend BRK as well. I've been to Marine Scene when I first joined the hobby. I was not happy and quite embarrassed to find out how much I overpaid for my RO/DI. They were very helpful though, but so is BRK.
  13. I didn't check my levels before or after the water change. These values are 1 week after water change. PH 8.4 KH 125.3 ppm KH Alkalinity: Too low. Lowest value read on Red Seas color chart. Last time I did a testing was 1/17/08 after a water change and the only thing different was ph at 8.2
  14. I did a 5 gallon water change, it didn't take quite as long for the red layer to develop on my sandbed. Layer is only on one side of the tank, eventhough I added another MJ1200 MOD after my water change. I cleaned about 1/2" of the top layer of the sand, tried to get all of the red out. My sandbed is only 2". I have a total of 3 MJ MODS on a wavemaker. I will do another water change tomorrow and change the direction of the powerheads to get to the deadspot.
  15. I can't seem to find his website.

  17. Anyone know of a good, respectable LFS that is willing to hire someone part time? I would like to work to learn more about the hobby.
  18. I finally took a picture! I'm guessing it's more purple than red. Underneath the layer is a lot of detritus. Thank you for the link, I will check our their skimmers. No, I don't have a refugium. Any suggestions for a fuge that can fit a skimmer? I'm not a DIYer. Hopefully, the picture got attached.
  19. So, should I get a new skimmer? I was told that my skimmer is mediocre for my tank size. I don't have too many corals but plan on having them in the future; If and when my algae issue resolves. I saved up $1500 so far to upgrade my tank. I am looking into a Ca reactor and kalk reactor but don't know where to start. I've heard Deltec, Precision Marine, Aqua Medic, Korallin and GEO Nielson are good brands. Too many choices!
  20. I ordered 2 more MJ1200 MODS since I only have two. I will do more water changes. I live in Lorton, VA. I plan on getting more equipment but don't know what to get. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or would like to see my set up and give me advice?
  21. My tank has been established for 2+ years and for about a month now, I have been battling red algae. My lights are on for 9 hours, I feed twice daily, do 5-10 gal weekly water changes with ro/di water. My lights are new. I tested my water levels and my nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, phosphate are all at 0. I siphon most of it that covers that rocks and sand bed. Tank is not near windows. I have to admit, there are detritus materials underneath the red algae, how do I get them out? Any advice? I was told that I can't mix through the sand bed when I am doing water changes.
  22. A LFS had recommended that I put in matrix carbon and phosguard into my sump for 1 week every month. I have noticed that once I take it out, algae will start to grow on sand surface. Green algae and brown hair algae. 90 gallon tank - I use ro/di water for changes and top offs. nitrates, phosphates are 0. I have 2 maxi-jet 1200 powerheads, euro-reef protein skimmer rs80. Any suggestions?
  23. I have been doing a lot of reading. One of my books are saying that I should change my lights every 6mo, even if they are working, becuase it emits red wavelengths? I am using 2 blue and 2 actinic lights made by Giesemann.
