  1. Welcome to Wamas.

If I may make just a couple of suggestions, the first one would be to really take your time to research and get well informed. Do visit other members and pick their brains. Not only it will give you first hand info on the many ways of setting up a reef system, you will also meet great people.

Become a paid member of WAMAS, it's only $20.00 per year but it will give you access to the member's area of this website such as the member's only, for sale for trade auctions etc...

For ex, I am a paid member and under my screen name it says, Wamas member. Others opt out to only be BB members, which only grants free restricted access. Trust me, these 20 bucks are worth every single penny and more.

Last but not the least, our winter meeting is just around the corner. I strongly reccomend you attend it.

    Happy Reefing

  2. It's been over 6 months since I last posted about the new tank.

I have been dealing with work issues to the point of almost relocating outside of the US.

As it stands right now I will stay in VA for another year.... so "the project" is back on the table.

Now is pretty cold, so keeping the 55 in the garage won

  3. Been toooooooo long since I've been on the website!

ALOT has been going on, not alot towards getting me back into the hobby though! :(

Got Laid Off on the 31st of December. Company lost a $100 Million Dollar Contract and I'm outside looking in now!

As many of you know, I've been doing Landscaping and Remodeling for years and figured now was the time to do it Full Time! A friend is working with me to setup my website: www.HowardsHavens.Com but he is taking way too much time to get it up, but trying to be patient, but time is running out soon! Got to get back to work, Spring seems too far off and got to get back to making money soon!

....how else am I going to be able to get a new tank up and running! :)

Appreciate Jean Marie' for all he has done holding my Percula Clownfish, I saw her the other day and miss her a bunch!!

Been out at Chip's place lately, tank is looking great and been a short fix until I'm back but for now, got to work on the money side of things now! :)

Hope everyone is doing great, will try to attend the next meeting coming up so see you all soon!!!

PS, If you know anyone looking for Landscaping or Remodeling, appreciate the heads up!

    Take Care!

Don't mention it, glad I can take care of her. You know you can stop by anytime :)

  4. search on wamas forum under Rik/leishman and red bug. I think either early this year or sometime last year, Rik had to battle a round of red bugs and he did lots of research, discussion and posted info. on here to share knowledge with everybody.

No need to go too far. Wamas search will be your best friend to start off.

LOL, like on this very forum, pinned thread tiled Dips and Cures... ;)

  5. Are they even out yet? I'm a little leary of trying something before there are any reviews out there.

Yes the bulbs are out and can be purchased directly from Icecap. Chris Conty told me he would maintain the Wamas special prices through January. As for the reviews, there aren't any I could find. So after the meeting I asked Calfo about the bulbs. He said that they are very good, PAR wise, when compared to other major name brands. In a nutshel, they averaged same readings, 5% better and 5% less, depending on which brand they were compared to. He also mentionned a few big names (but cannot remember them for my own sake) in the coral farmers industry that run exclusively Icecap bulbs over their systems.

  6. Don't know with how or what, but count me in. I will recommend beings I didn't see it mentioned, replacing the Coralife dual timer ASAP. From personal experience with 12" flames coming off one, they are a danger to anyone and everyone.

I am a cancer survivor, I know what a treatment room looks like. When I was done with my chemo treatments I would have nightmares that I woke up from where I could still feel them putting the chemo needle into my arm and the chemicals going into my system.

To all of you offering to help, bless you all, you are wonderful people.

Excellent point on the Coralife timer Kevin. Mike, I have a couple of individual timers you can have right away.

  7. I've owned a Typhoon III for many years and I've conducted several group buys where dozens of these units have been purchased. I don't recall any warnings about limiting output to xx gallons per day. They do recommend a limit on how high your water pressure should be and I think it is 75psi. Could that be what you read?

What Bob said. The warning is about not exeeding 75 Psi and not about how many gallons per day you will produce. I also have a Typhoon III and it is what is written on the label: "Do not exeed 75 PSI" :)

  8. What about a "Giving for Gracie" Wamas event? We could select a day to meet at the hospital and bring a bunch of donations, help get everything set up/connected, etc and then go out for eats/drinks.

    Anyone interested?

    Maureen,

As usual, you come up with the sweetest and greatest ideas. Count me in. If the doc's office aren't a good location choice, as they have patients under treatment. We can always find an alternate place. In which case, I'll be more than happy to host a "bring the goodies" at my place. From there, a small group of volunteers could go do the set up instead of having the whole membership crowding the doc's place.

  9. Yes it is a 4' fixture but I was gonna rip it apart and stagger the bulbs on my hood. But I agree with yall that it would be better to join and buy a fixture from wamas. I just don't wanna join now and only have less than a mounth till I have to pay again.

Just to clarify. Your membership is not calendar based as in Jan Dec period. It is valid for 12 months as of the date you join. You join today, your membership will be valid til Dec 2009.

  10. I have a hippo tang that is about 4.5-5 inches long, and a juvenile blue tang that is about 3 inches long.

I mentioned my issue with ich on my tank thread, I'm really worried this time.

I'm considering putting them in a QT tank but would a 12 gallon eclipse bow front be too small for them? It's the only tank I have available and, being a very broke college kid around christmas ....I can't afford much else.

Also what else should i have for them while they are in there? I've never had to do this before, so I'm totally lost.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated, thanks :]

The 12 gal will be fine for QT purposes. Add either a HOB filter for water movement, or a small powerhead and an air stone if you do not have an HOB filter. Daily water changes will take care of the ammonia nitrites nitrates build up. Also ad a few large pieces of PVC so they can hide while treated. Lights are not needed for QTing fishies. Have SW batches available.

I would fill the QT tank with water from your main tank and replenish the main tank with the new SW batch. Also ich has a several weeks life span, so it will take that long to eradicate it. I usually do it for twice the life span to make sure that it is really eradicated. Read about ich and treat accordingly.
