thought you might want to hear how the corals are doing that I recently bought from you.... I am amazed how fast the ORA HAWKINS BLUE ECHINATA is growing, I thought it would be a very slow grower but I am able to frag it twice already (once was by accident...LOL) .... the ORA PHIL

Welcome to the 'family'

the only thing I have recently changed in my tank is:
took out the airstone(figured it was unneeded and made lots of bubbles-although it did look nice with the curtain of bubbles on the backside of the tank)
bought a better Skimmer....
have been raising my Calcium lately... was up to 370 yesterday.... its always been low(320-340) so I bought the 2-part stuff and been *slowing* raising ....
tested parameters yesterday, everything was inline except my PH.... 7.7 .... but it was early morning and figured I would test again later in the day and make changes then if still low (got busy and never did)
made a 5 gallon water change...
went out to eat for dinner.... checked on the tank-everything looked OK....went to bed
I got up this morning and checked the tank.... strange, I dont' see the usually 'aren't I BEAUTIFUL' yellow Tang strutting about.... found him on the backside floor of the tank.... dead.... also found my Banded Coral Shrimp upside down :( dead...
My banded pipefish and bicolor blenny are fighting for their life at the moment.... the only inhabitants that look like nothing is wrong are my clowns, scooter dragonette and yellow goby. the scooter is the only one that looks like its eating, swimming from rock to rock... I have noticed the peppermints dying lately and now have none in my tank....my corals don't look bad, they all seem to be OK...
could my dropped PH be the cause??? I put the airstone back into the tank, just in case it had something to do with the O2 in the tank....
I feel like crap.... the Tang has been with me since I got started back into SW.... the pipefish was the first purchase...
shoot!!!! what an Easter wakeup :(

This may not mean much to you guys but it means a great deal to me. I find that having your lady salesperson is a GREAT joy for me. She recognizes me and I feel alot better talking with her. Guess its a girl thing but I just feel better knowing you have a woman in there too Hats off to her too! she knows her corals and store items!! and she doesn't mind taking all the money from my purse....LOL.... you trained her well, Johnny....

Well, thanks for the kind words guys. And for the rest of you a Bronx Cheer!
I would love to be open 7 days a week, and am working towords that. As most of you know this is a Koi shop turned marine, and Mon - wed are Koi pond maint days (yes, I work 7 days a week). I am working towords staffing my store to be able to provide the same level of service that you are used to, wether I am here or not. I refuse to add on those extra days until I feel comfortable that we can do so properly. I have hired a strong staff and continue to traing them vigorously. What I do ask is, when you come in, dont wait or ask for me, start putting my staff through the ropes, I will be nearby if needed.
thanks again for all your support!

Thats so weird. I've never seen a clear skimmer box like the one posted in your gallery. Where did you get that one??
thats the one AquaC customer service sent to me....I guess that picture was made for dummies like me... so we could see the inside.....LMAO!!!
-
How often do you empty/rinse skimmer cup/resevoir?
wouldn't this also need to consider how BIG the skimmer is?? therefore making the skimmer cup larger and needing it to be emptied less often?? mine is a HOB and usually needs cleaning every week....
just curious....
-
Thanks everyone..... AquaC has GREAT customer support and has sent me a picture, its in my gallery.... and I understand now how to fix it..... I stupidly was trying to CONNECT the pump to the inlet thing on the skimmer while the pump sits in the preskimmer..... when if fact, I see now, I don't have to do that...... DOH!!! sometimes, I amaze myself with dumbness.....LOL....
Thanks for all of your help!!!!

maybe that watermelon frag and a few others.......

I may have made a mistake in ordering this unit....
http://www.proteinskimmer.com/Product%20Pa...emora%20Pro.htm
AquaC Remora Pro hang-on with Pre-skimmer
first off, its HUGE.... much larger than my little rinky-dink one I have now.... and I am worried about the weight this might have on the back of my tank...
secondly, I am NOT mechanically inclined and I can't figure out where everything is suppose to fit.... and I can't find any 'installed' pictures on the website....
Is anyone using this unit, and if so, can you provide an ' installed' picture so I can figure it out.... the preskimmer has me confused and I dont know if the pump is suppose to go IN the preskimmer or if the pump goes outside the preskimmer and pumps into it.... and is this preskimmer even worth the trouble of installing??
suggestions???

Thanks for the suggestions, but the phytoplankton I wonder about.... this thing is eating Brine Shrimp like its candy.... In fact, the mouths seem to fight over them....I have it mid-tank under the brace for the tank, so it isn't getting full light(T5).... it seems happy and reminds me of that man-eating plant I saw on a movie once (Little Shop of Horrors).
This coral is quickly turning out to be one of my favorites...

Pectinia is the genus and yes it is an SPS. It is considered by most to be a difficult specimen, but I find them relatively hardy once acclimated. Feeding the tank something like DT's is required for good health.
An ideal condition is of course pristine water conditions but unlike many SPS corals the lighting cannot be that intense, PC's, T5's or VHO's seem to bring out its best appearance. If the tank is illuminated with MH's be sure to place your new specimen in the lower (mid to lower) areas of the tank and not directly under the bulb. Flow is another tricky portion for this coral. Too much flow will tear its thin fleshy tissue and may even break the delicate skeleton. Too little flow will allow excess mucus to build and suffocate your new prize. As with any reef tank the flow should be alternating, so to recap; moderate lighting and flow with regular feeding of phytoplankton will keep this one beautiful specimen.
Best of Luck...

really a neat looking piece that's a softie right?

I bought this from Mr Coral today... its a beautiful greenish color in the middle and just a weird looking coral.... I LOVE it but can't remember what Mr coral called it :(
anyway, Pic1 is it sitting, nice a quiet like.... peaceful....I had NO IDEA what was about to happen...
I fed my tank and inhabitants..... went back to check on everything and turn the pumps/filters back on and WHOA!! this coral looks like something from a Horror flick....! all puffed up and mouths gaping open... the huge middle mouth looks like it has teeth....LOL.....
What a wonderful surprise with this beautiful coral.... although now I think I am going to count my fingers everytime I take my hand outta my tank
enjoy the pics.... I just wish I could tell ya what the coral name is :(

I know who has the real deal to purchase from in the future: Ben, Bob, Chris and Rik.
HEY!!!
what about me............

Jan,
What kind of lighting did you have it under? What bulb combination did u use? Flow? Water quality?
I want to make sure I get as good of growth that u did.
I only have T5s, Chris, so be sure not to burn it with the XM you got, though it does do better, it seems to me, with higher lights.....just give it alittle adjusting time
.... I found, in my tank, it does better:
high in tank, closer to the lights (T5s)
sits on a rock close to the intake/outake of the filter (H.O.T.)
there is a higher flow(compared to the rest of my tank) where it sits but never directly...
I do water changes once a month, 30 - 50%
I have actnics on for 30mins, then all lights for 10 hours, then actnics on for 30 mins.
2 x 39W Actinic Plus T5 HO Fluorescent (104036) by Giesemann (ordered from ReefGeek)
2 x 39W 6000K Midday Sun T5 HO Fluorescent (104034) by Giesemann (ordered from ReefGeek) constan
my temp is pretty constant at 78.7
With my tank, this coral seems to grow very fast, hopefully you will get the same results....
Good luck, Chris.... It is a beautiful coral when it gets established.... keep the pics coming ! I love to see what it does....

Nano tank newbie
in Nano Tanks
been reading about the Nano Tanks and looking at the beautiful pics posted. I am so excited to finally get back into SW! I will probably have 2-3 small tanks (20-30G range or smaller) instead of 1 large one... just suits my lifestyle better right now....Questions abound though as to what I should be looking for when I purchase the Nano. I have never bought one so I don't know the 'bells n' whistles' than might make life easier for the maintenance/viewing of the tanks... where to buy from? brand names to look for?? accessories??
I think one of the tanks will be a Seahorse tank(small ones of course) and maybe a clown/red anemone tank... not sure about the third one yet....
any advice is greatly appreciated!
