Experience in hobby

How long have you been doing this?

We started our first saltwater tank together back in 2005.

Who in the hobby most influences you?

My girlfriend. Without her, I probably would have quit half a dozen times.

Tank setup and equipment

120g Oceanic Tech mixed reef with a starboard bottom.

What is your maintenance schedule like?

Probably not as good as it should be. We try to scrape the front and sides at least once a week, and do a 15% water change every week. Prior to doing a water change, we siphon out loose detris that settles on the bottom of the starboard or cracks along the side.

How much time do you spend weekly?

About an hour.

Favorite Corals
  • ORA Red Planet
  • ORA Borealis
  • ORA Blue Voodoo
  • ORA Green Birdsnest
  • ORA Birds of Paradise
  • Tubs Blue Zoas
  • Bam Bam Zoas
  • Fire & Ice Zoas
  • Nuclear Green Palys
  • Purple Death Palys

Where do you keep your water parameters?

Most are within normal ranges, but our pH water is low.

What brand salt do you use?

Reef Crystals.

What do you feed your fish and or corals?

We feed a wide variety of foods which include frozen brine shrimp with spirulina, mysis, emerald tree, prime reef, and cyclop-eeze. For dry flakes we feed formula one, formula two, and spirulina. We also include sheets of nori three or four times a week.

How do you maintain calcium/alkalinity?

Pray a lot.

Do you dose anything? If so, how much, how often?

We don't dose anything or add anything extra to the tank other then regular water changes.

What type of lighting do you have and what schedule do you have them on?

Two 150w Phoenix 14k halides in Reef Optix III pendants with IceCap electronic ballasts.
Halides come on at 4pm and go off at 11pm.

What kind of water flow do you have? How do you accomplish it?

Just around 40x turnover rate. For flow we use a Mag 7 return and four NanoStream 6045s spread throughout the tank.

What are your future plans for improvement/upgrade of the tank?

Would like to add a frag section to the sump.

Inverts
  • RBTA
  • Fire Shrimp
  • Two Peppermint Shrimp
  • Porcelain Crab
  • Various snails and crabs

What makes your setup special or unique?

I think the rock columns that I built make this tank more unique. There are definite advantages and disadvantages, but we wanted something different for this tank and I think we accomplished that.

If you had to start from scratch, would you do anything different?

Probably get a glass overflow instead of plastic to make it easier to remove algae.

Do you have any advice for those folks whom are new to the hobby.

Research as much as you can prior to buying anything. Don't go the cheap route, invest in quality items the first time and it will save you in the long run. Go slow, have fun, and don't get discouraged. We all have setbacks.

Which fish is your most favorite?

Anna Kournikova, back in her prime. Yes, I just got smacked.
