michaelg May 9, 2005 Share May 9, 2005 The director of Reef Protection Institute has sent a request to us to help him with some books for research purposes. Perhaps they can be collected at the meeting on Saturday to make shipping easiest. I will be happy to take care of the mailing. In the event I am not there, perhaps one of the officers can collect them and drop them by my house so I can mail them off to Drew. In brief, the "Reef Guide" is a small pamphlet similar in design to the seafood guides which are little pocket things to take shopping to make responsible purchasing descisions. In this case, livestock for our saltwater tanks. Here is the letter from Drew. Thanks in advance for your help. Michael >>>>>>>>> Hi there - It was nice speaking with you all on Saturday. Thanks, again, for allowing me the chance to speak during your meeting. As I mentioned, we are getting ready to begin research for the Reef Guide and I wanted to see if WAMAS may be able to help us out. Some of the books we intend to use are quite expensive and in an effort to keep our costs down, we were hoping to borrow them from some of our reefer supporters. If you feel it appropriate, perhaps you might query the club and see if anyone would be willing to lend us the following books listed below. If you feel this would be appropriate, please see if we can scroung up books asap. We promise to return them in the same condition they were sent and will replace them no questions asked if they are lost or damaged. Thanks for your continued support! drew list of books needed: Burgess, W. 2000. Atlas of Marine Aquarium Fishes, TFH Publications. Cato, J. (et al). 2003. RPI May 9, 2005 Share May 9, 2005 Hello WAMAS reefers - thanks to Michael Gerdes for posting our request. You guys are the best! One more thing to note about the book loan, we will be using them for about 2 months. Should that change, I will let everyone who loans us a book know in case you need them back. As stated before, we promise to take very, very good care of your books If you can swing this for Saturday's meeting, that would be great. We need them yesterday....haha. Take care and thanks........drew ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Drew Weiner Director Reef Protection International 300 Broadway, Suite 28 San Francisco, CA 94133 ph: 415-699-2091 fax: 415-788-7324 dweiner@reefprotect.org http://www.reefprotect.org **a project of the Earth Island Institute**

michaelg May 16, 2005 Author Share May 16, 2005 Eric and Howard. If you can, please mail them off directly to Drew. I bought Scott Michael's 500 + pocket book at the meeting from Dr. Mac, and will see if I can pick up another. Personally, I need some fish books for my library, so don't mind at all (and funny that I have more trouble finding healthy fish than I do corals). Some one in the club must have the burgess books????? FWIW, anyone concerned with the return of their books, Drew will be here for MACNA as one of our speakers. These are the two I will try to find: Cato, J. (et al). 2003. Marine Ornamental Species: Collection, Culture & Conservation, Iowa State Press. Fenner, R. 1999. A Fishwatcher's Guide to The Saltwater Aquarium Fishes of the World, Wet Web Media.

HowardofNOVA May 20, 2005 Share May 20, 2005 Drew, I'm in the midst of 8 month remodeling project and have not been able to locate my book: "Tullock, J. 1997. Natural Reef Aquariums: Simplified Approaches to Creating Living Saltwater Microcosms, TFH Publications." YET! Will still look over the weekend and get it out to ASAP! My apologize to you. Question though, I looking at getting this book: "Book Of Coral Propagation by Anthony Rosario Calfo" and have "Aquarium Corals by Eric Borneman" available if you need that as well. My free time for reading is rather limited right now. If I pay for Calfo book and ship it to you directly, would that be a problem and then when your finished with it, just mail it back to me so I can read it? :D Would you be interested in the Borneman book as well? RPI May 20, 2005 Share May 20, 2005 Hi Howard - thank you for following up and your offer. Actually, the project we are working on now is around fish only. So, no need (yet) for your coral books. Thanks anyway, drew

michaelg June 19, 2005 Author Share June 19, 2005 I mailed out the S. Michael 1999 marine fish book yesterday. Spent the previous few days looking through it with my daughter and explaining the codes in it as to which fish would be good for aquaria. Now we just need to get something similar in the hands of the (new) aquarist! Next paycheck I will try to get the other 2 books I mentioned (the cato book is $$$), and have them sent directly to you. Hopefully you will be done with them by MACNA If anyone else can help, I'm sure Drew probably still needs the rest of the books on the list??? Please don't feel any obligation to get more books, although we'd love them. To the other WAMAS folks, if any of the above books are sitting collecting dust on your bookcase (or in your tank stand, haha), please consider loaning them to us. We now have 4 interns working on the Reef Guide and they all need books. Thanks. Also, Michael, what is the best em to reach you at these days? Again, thanks for the help.......drew
michaelg June 23, 2005 Author Share June 23, 2005 Hi Drew- I love books, so getting some new ones in an area I don't have any is a treat for me! I will drop a line today with an e-mail to reach me at and give an update. I am still seeing RPI stuff through my old account, but it is going to get shut down soon.
