  1. Our Annual Spring Seminar Is Approaching Very Quickly!

    Saturday April 18, 2009

Please join us for this one of a kind event featuring two exciting speakers!! CMAS is pleased to welcome Mr. Ken Nedimyer of Sealife Inc and Mr. Bob Fenner of Wet Web Media!

CMAS Presents Mr. Ken Nedimyer of Sealife Inc.

    k_nedimyer.jpg

    Abstract: Florida Keys Coral Restoration

Ken Nedimyer owns and operates Sea Life Inc (www.sealifeinc.net) a marine life wholesale and on line Retail Company that has been in business since 1984. Ken has collected marine specimens since 1969, and has been an aquarist since 1966. Ken has been an active scuba diver since 1970, and has logged over 20,000 hours in the water over the last 39 years.

In 1994 Ken received permits to start the first offshore live rock aquaculture farm in the Florida Keys, and has operated it successfully since the first harvests began in 1996. In 2000 using corals that had settled on his live rock, Ken and one of his daughters began testing techniques for re-attaching branches of staghorn coral that had been broken off the rocks by sharks, turtles, and storms. They work eventually led to a pilot coral restoration project using their reattached corals, which has since led to a large-scale coral nursery and restoration program.

In 2009, Ken received permits to start two offshore elkhorn coral nurseries, the first of their kind in the US, and he and volunteer divers will be busy setting it up this spring and summer.

In 2007, Ken formed the Coral Restoration Foundation Inc (www.coralrestoration.org ), a non profit company focused on developing simple, effective, and inexpensive coral nursery and coral restoration techniques that could be duplicated anywhere. Their offshore coral nursery has grown from five corals that settled on his rock in 1996, to over 4,000 corals in March of 2009, and expected to grow to over 7,000 corals by spring of 2010. In 2008 they planted over 200 corals back onto the reef, and are expected to plant over 500 in 2009.

In June of 2009 Ken will participate on his second weeklong saturation mission in the Aquarius to participate in a coral restoration research project underway there. Live video of the June mission will be available on the Aquarius Website (http://uncw.edu/aquarius/ ).

Ken will be speaking on offshore aquaculture and coral restoration, but will be available to answer questions about the marine life fishery, marine life collecting, the Aquarius, and issues related to Staghorn and Elkhorn corals.

  8. When george and I moved we still had some alive. Those things are terrible once they reach plague proportions. We had some in a 150gal rubbermaid sump for 2 years with nothing but very slight amounts of ambient lights and they lived until we dried the rocks out. We sold the majority of our mini tapetums a few years ago between cmas & wamas. When we moved, we dried our rock out.

    Hello everybody!

Our October CMAS meeting is approaching very quickly! This month we have a very special guest speaker from the National Aquarium In Baltimore.

Keri O'Neil, Senior Aquarist at NAIB, will be speaking about SECORE Project. SECORE was developed in 2002 to establish captive coral populations using sexual reproduction. Primarily the techniques were aimed at stocking public aquaria with live captive raised corals. Over the years, it became obvious that the established techniques might also play an important role in future coral reef restoration. Keri has had the opportunity to participate in this wonderful endeavor and share her experience with us.

All attendees will be able to participate in a behind the scenes tour of the National Aquarium In Baltimore. The meeting will be held at NAIB under the direct supervision or Keri O'Neil & her assistant Heather. All Rules & Regulations will need to be followed. Please see attached Regulations.

Please Join us Sunday, October 12th at 5:45pm for an evening of fun and learning. The meeting time is PROMPTLY at 5:45pm at the security entrance, At 6pm we will enter the building and any STRAGGLERS WILL NOT BE ADMITTED

    2. We will meet you at the Security entrance to the aquarium, this is near the submarine and is a set of sliding glass doors with black framework. It is past (toward the back of the Pier) the regular aquarium entrance. This is the same place we met previously.
