I think it's a tiger goby.

Two weeks after getting my Live Rock from the Gulf of Mexico I found a small, white fish?? darting around my Nano after the lights went out ... It's about 1/4in long, has distinct eyes - too fast to take a pic or get a closer look. Any idea what this hitchhiker is?

JM: Thanks. Stop by sometime. It's been a while!
AlanM: I'm keeping it simple. Cobalt Neo-Therm 50E heater, no skimmer, for ATO I'm using a TOM Aqua Lifter on a digital timer - 1 min dose every 2h. (~35mL) That works out to about 3L per week. One gal container is hidden behind the tank. I'm also using ReefKeeper Lite to monitor temp and pH. My light (not pictured yet) is a MicMol Mini LED fixture.

Instead of using 10.0 pH calibration solution, you can create a DIY batch of a very stable 9.180 pH solution using off-the-shelf borax. Not sure if Apex supports programmable calibration mode - my Reef Keeper surely does. This way you only need to buy a bottle of 7.00 pH, which is not affected by the exposure to CO2.

Thanks!!! I'm thinking of eventually adding a pair of clown fish and maybe a blenny.

Hello,
It's been a slow process, but my previous 6g Fluval Edge has been retired and replaced with a 8g CADlights Mini-II system. The tank has already cycled and I'm starting to slowly add livestock. So far I have few coral frags, a cleaner shrimp, emerald mithrax crab, and couple of hermits and snails. One Mexican Turbo snail is done with his diatom bloom cleanup and awaiting trade. Couple pics from today:

Sorry about not updating this build. I have dropped off the forum for a while, but I'm slowly making a come back. The tank has been going well, but in the past 6 months I have been fighting a case of bryopsis algae which slowly took over the Live Rock. This was a good excuse to start a new build, and hence I went a slightly different direction and purchased a CAD Lights 8G Mini-II reef system. Stay tuned for some pics under a new build.

How many gallons is that? What kind of lights? Are you planning doing SPS, LPS or softies?
-
Have you considered lowering your chiller thermostat from 81F to 80F? That may eliminate some of these spikes. Your chiller has to work longer to get the temp down from 81F to 78F.

Did you mean sump instead of refugium? The trick is to fill it so that when your power goes out and your main pump shuts down, it doesn't overflow your sump. There are ways to mitigate that: a hole in your return plumbing to break the siphon, check valve (not ideal solution), or simply designing the system with large enough sump.

I've upgraded the stock 1W LED lights to something more powerful: 12W Aquaray MiniLED 500HD. (4-10,000k white lensed Cree XP-E & 1 blue unlensed Cree XP-E LEDs) The difference is quite amazing. For my lifestock, I've added 2 mated firefish. They are quite active and seem to be doing well. I also have 2 hermit crabs: blue and burgundy legged, and 3 Nassarius snails. Also, I'm not cleaning the back wall, as the white specs visible in the pic are some sort of isopods.

Seems like a waste unless you plan to use it somewhere else later.
That's always the idea, right?

I'm thinking about adding a power head to my 6-gal nano. One of the least obtrusive units is obviously the Vortech MP10. It also appears to transfer the least amount of heat. Can anyone comment on how much flow it will produce on its lowest setting? I don't want a rip current, just a reasonably gentle flow that will keep the reef healthy. Any one willing to lend/demo one just to see how it works out in my setup before I commit to ordering one?

One way to get rid of bubble algae that worked for me is to take the rock out of the tank, and gently pry it off with a toothpick. Try not to puncture the bubble as it will release more spores. If you leave it alone, it will spread all over your live rock.

Ricordea. That's a keeper!

What my 14 gallon Biocube looked like
Very nice! What do you feed your firefish?

A quick update... Not even 3 weeks old, and my nano-reef seems to be teeming with life - I'm seeing a ton of marine plankton - copepods, amphipods, isopods, etc. As a matter of fact, I may have too many amphipods. Every square inch of live rock is full of these little critters. Some of them are approaching 1/2" size. I've also got a few softies which seem to be doing fine. Next week I think I'm ready to add a fish. (still deciding on what to get...)

Sorry to hear. Naso tangs are also my fav tangs. You may want to do a partial water change just to be safe and keep checking the parameters.
-
Check your ammonia level and do a partial water change as necessary. You may have some die off after the power outage. If your lights were off your oxygen levels might have dropped.

I've been asked to write a series of topics to be the basis of a maintenance guide for all levels of experience.
I'm currently doing the "fish only" topic and would like any input from WAMAS that I may have missed or am clearly wrong about.
Thanks...
-R/O filters need to be checked regularly for less than a 10% ratio of TDS.
TDS is measured in ppm not percent.

You're fine at that temp. You can go as low as 72.
I've got a 400W inverter if anyone needs to borrow it. My power came back up around 6am. (lucky me)

I have some experience with firefish in a large reef tank. My guess is - they found a great hiding spot and are still hiding. It may be a week or two before you see them.
-
What's the TDS before the DI stage?
-
Now there is a Name i have not see in a long time! welcome back.
I think the biggest issue with the firefish and your tank is when they get scared they jump.
Hey Bob!
Yeah, I'm kinda back. We'll see how far I can take this Nano. And yes, Edge has a unique top glass cover, so jumping is not an option.
Looking for RODI water
in General Discussion
Hi all,
Anyone in Reston/Sterling area could let me have some RODI water? I'm in the process of moving my set-up and run into problems reconnecting my RODI. I just need a gallon or so for my nano's ATO until I get my RODI working again.
Thanks!
