Jim (telegram on YouTube/Instagram) has done a lot of testing and reviews of cheap lights. Maybe watch a few of his videos and choose from his findings. He does legit spectrum and par test on the cheap lights that BRS and such won't do.

Yeah I agree he has a video on modding the viparspectras to make the compairable to the XR15

  2. I used it for bubble algae and it worked, took me a little more then 3 months for it to go away I never had any of the problems but I took it slow.  It will kill your chaeto I left mine in just to see what would happen.  I never hand a nutrient problem because 100% of my export was my chaeto and with it going away I didn't have any export.   I did get the starts to Cyano in my sump but I turned the light out and it died out but I never hand any of it in my display.  Would I use it again IDK it seemed to take a lot longer then I would have hoped but i did have bubble algae everywhere.

Just curious for those who had it bottom their nutrients what was you using as nutrient export?

Looking good! I like how you’re matching the cabinets to tie everything together.

Thanks they are old kitchen cabinets from a remodel that I grabbed before they got trashed.  I removed the handles and gave them a nice coat of paint and they match the ones on my 55.

  4. I currently have a 55 gallon mixed reef and now its time to upgrade I decided to go with a 180 and use my 55 as a BTA tank.  To make my life easier I wanted to plumb the tanks together so I would just have 1 large system.  My 180 I got used from Pizzaguy and it came with a tigger systems 36 sump but I wanted to add a separate large refugium to handle whatever bioload I can through at it.  So i got a 44g tank for the fuge and used the wet dry sump that came with the 44g as my Ato reservoir which I installed a float switch and programmed the Apex to shut off the ato and text me when its empty .  I also installed a 40 breeder for use as a frag tank later down the road.   I bought the rock used so I let it cure for around 3 months running GFO and doing water changes to pull out the phosphate from the rock.   I also dossed live rock enhance and Microbactor7 to the rocks to help build the bacteria.  I used Marco mortar to create the auqscape and prevent any moving of the rocks by inverts and fish (lesson learned).  I made sure all my parameters where as close as possible I had to dose NO3 into the 180 to get it close P04 was close enough.  And when I joined the 2 systems My corals in the 55 never skipped a beat.  I am running 2 return pumps one pump runs the 55 and the frag tank, the second vectra M1 runs the 180 and I have it plumed for the future addition of another tank into the system.  If I would have known how powerful the vectra pump was it could have easily powered the entire system.  Total system volume should be right around 300 gallons taking into account for the rock and sand.

  5. Emerald Crabs will help but in my experience they don't rid it but will keep it at bay.  I have been using Vibrant for the last 2 months with good success in combination with emerald crabs.  Seems like as the crabs eat it the vibrant is preventing it from returning.  I have not had any problems with vibrant other then I got some brown slime in my sump which I believe it because My chaeto has died back and the lights grew the brown slime, it was easy to clean out but I havent had any issues with my display.

You can find classics for under $200 (just have to keep your eyes peeled and act quickly. You can further your cost savings by going with an apex lite. It's essentially a classic but does not have the vdm port and only has one pH/orp port.

What does the vdm port do

The Apex classic is plenty powerful.  I use one Apex classic to run all aspects of my 350 and my frag tank.

You can pick up a complete used Apex classic, DC8, temp probe, and display for around $300.

At $300 it seems like you should save a bit more and get an el for 499

I was on the fence but ultimately pulled the trigger.  I really like the ability to monitor my tank remotely.  The safety features also give me peace of mind....heartbeat, heater shutoff light shutoff etc....  I would like one for my new tank as well just need to get the $$$$

You got the classic or the new one?

  9. I'm wanting a bit more control and automation in my tank.  Right now I'm using a couple manual timers to control supplemental lighting and fuge lights that would be nice to get rid of the timers, I also would like to automate my protein skimmer its a pain to have to unplug it and plug it back in when I dose something that requires a 4hr period with out the skimmer, half the time I forget to plug it in, and to set up a feed mode would be nice just to click one button and shut everything off rather then going from pump to pump.    I guess my question is the apex classic worth buying at this point?  I dont really want to put down 500 for a new EL when I doubt Ill ever get a trident anyway.
