Glad I listened to the Herbie method recommendation, night and day difference sound wise! Still tuning but even the wife was happy with the difference. I went with an Eheim 1262 for the return pump, it honestly feels like overkill. Going to throw a gate valve on it to tune it down some.

Attached a pic of the temporary completion, need to figure out the ATO situation and clean up all the cabling.

As always thanks for the help everyone.

Awesome, glad it worked out. You will be happy with the eheim, they are good pumps.

  2. So I am itching to get back in the hobby. Wanting to go the 40 Breeder route and drill the back. This will be in my living room so a canopy to help with light pollution is a must. Also since it's in the living room I want it to look nicely finished. I figure I have two options listed below. Wondering which one you all will think is best.

Option A: standard diy wooden stand with canopy and paint/stain. I have seen a number of videos online on building these and it seems straight forward enough.

Option B: Buy the steel stand for a 40 breeder that I can get for $60. Then use high gloss cabinet board and clips that attach to the metal frame as the skin. Then

make the canopy out of the high gloss board as well.

Noise will also be a concern. I feel like the high gloss will look better but it may be tougher to make it quiet?

    Thoughts?

  3. Herbie is the best setup for what you have and you will have to run the return over the back.

I recommend Reef Octopus Various return pumps. They are really reliable and silent.

The Sicces are ok but I have gotten a couple in the past that were not quiet.

  4. I worked part time at a Petco as the aquatics specialist. I was the only person who had a clue what they were doing, They were topping off the marine tanks with saltwater. Petcos are hit or miss and all depends on the staff. After working there i really think they should stop selling fish, specifically saltwater

  5. The barb fitting that connects my vinyl tubing to the pvc of my return has slow leak where the vinyl fits on the barbs. What can I do about this? Can I put silicone or pvc cement on the barbs? Any advice is appreciated.

  6. Looking for advice on addressing my GHA problem while moving my tank. Tank is a 90 gallon reef.

Right after Xmas my tank crashed. I lost most everything except for some softies and 2 anemones. Before the crash I was having a problem with GHA and I was feeding very little but saw no effect. After the crash I did 2 large water changes a week apart but still the GHA blew up and is now everywhere. I will be using a GFO Reactor going forward to see if that helps. My question is what to do about the GHA while I have the rocks in tubs while moving the tank. I am re-plumbing so the rocks will be in tubs for a couple of days. One suggestion has been Lanthium Chloride but I am hesitant. I know I will need to manually remove as much as I can but looking for any other tips on how to address it. I will also be ditching my sand and getting new, hopefully that will help as well.

    TIA

  7. What is your rockwork like..... it needs to allow for a circular flow or for the flow your looking for.

I ran 2 mp40 on my 90g, when things grew in I added a 3rd to the back wall....

Here is a pic of my tank, a couple of months ago. the hair algea that is on the rock on the left has mostly went away but now it is in random places towards the middle of the rockwork where flow is low.

I would even consider two RW8's, one on each side panel.

So apparently they are making RW8s anymore, now they are PP8s.

  8. You should anticipate the water you will move. The gyres will do a good job, but as mentioned, maintenance is no fun. Is your 90 4'? 2 MP's on the back wall will cover your tank. I ran 2 mp40s on a 150 gallon 6' with no problems. I then upgraded with 2 more jebaos, as well. Can't remember their make, but I was primarily SPS at the time.

Yea its a 4ft tank. I dont really have tge funds to pony up for 2 mp40s so if one wont do it then I may just go with the Gyre. I have seen one at 70% on a 90 and it was way too much.I also wouldnt mind keeping both the koralia and jebao if getting the mp40 but if it isnt going to be significantly better than the jebao i might as well just get another rw8

  9. I'm not sure it will be MUCH more powerful... those Rw8 move some water.. but the two combined would be perfect imo...

That worries me. I originally had a RW8 on both sides till one went out and I never felt like i was moving enough water. With the one I have now the flow barely makes it halfway across the tank. And at least with the jebaos you can direct the flow.

Im worried that if the mp40 isnt that much stronger and since you cant change the direction that i will be spending a lot of money and not fixing my problem

  10. I agree with what's been said above...

I wanted to add some info for #4.. look into a full siphon setup, especially with 2 overflows it would be even easier to create.. I did this for the first time and it's so quiet and smooth once dialed in... herbie Overflow is what many call it..

I agree. OP look into these types of Overflows. "Bean Animal Overflow" and "Herbie Overflow". The bean animal is preferred but I am not sure how that works on  a tank with dual overflows

  11. So saw these little things last night and i have no idea what it is. This is the only one as far as I can see. It is anchored to the rock right in front of a powerhead and moves a little bit with the current. Any ideas?

  12. To all the people using locktite, check out harbor freight gel superglue it's 1/3 the price for the same stuff. It comes from the same company in China.
