  1. Where you been Ben???  Put the lotion in the basket!

What’s up man??!! I’m moving over close to you actually. By Cabin John. My last job had me traveling 5 days a week, so I let my tank slowly disintegrate to almost nothing. And became a recluse. Quit that job for a much better one that only has me travel once a month or so. Excited to get back into it.

    How’s the tank?

  2. Yup still lurking . The 150g is coming along slowly.  Might have water in it in 2 months.

I’m moving to a bigger house and plan to build out a new system in a couple of months. Should be fun. My 120 is still kicking, but it’s seen better days.

  3. I bet they are unbelievably swamped right now. I just bought the new one that came out a couple weeks ago. I never thought I would buy one but it had some features that sucked me in. I'm sure I'm one of thousands that waited and I bet they can't handle it. Hope you get this resolved if you need me to temporarily hold some small frags for safe keep let me know. Stay on checking the alk like a hawk checking her nest. With all the changes and extra unknown consumption at night I bet it has fluctuated a little. Good catch and good luck with it!

Tank will be fine....it will just be a setback. It will need to recover. Patience is something that smacks me in the face every once in a while.

Btw your Pearlberry frag is fine.

  4. Wow. It just bricked? But it's still running? That's the first time that I've heard of one doing that. Not that I follow a bunch of Apex forums or anything.

Years ago, when I had an AC-III, I had a problem with it and, back then, you used to be able to get Curt (the developer of the AC-III and Neptune founder) on the phone and he'd find a way to get you going again. He'd make an above-and-beyond effort that really made you appreciate the personal service. Unfortunately, those days may be behind us.

I hope that this gets resolved soon for you.

I had the AC-III for years with no issues. I may have even got it second hand. Solid product, but doesn't have the bells and whistles we all "need" now. Once you go to the dark side....

  5. So, guess what everyone??!!  It happened again.  This time it was worse.

About 2 weeks ago, I started noticing my corals were fading a little.  I did the usual water change and checked my parameters. All was good.  About a week ago, I saw some of my high end corals were getting white tips.  I started to panic a little and did another water change and checked parameters.  I also cut a couple of hours off my lights to be safe.  Three days ago I just happened to go to the basement where I have the tank at about 11:30 at night.  My Metal Halides and my T5s were on.  I looked at my Apex Fusion and it didn't show them as being on or show them consuming power.  I do not know how long this had been going on, but that is obviously why my corals are bleaching out and fading.  The lights were always off in the morning when I see it, but somehow they were turning on during the night.

At this point I decided to reset the system and see if it corrects the problem.  I reset and my main unit did not come back on.  It is a black brick now.  No status lights, no nothing.  Just like my original post.  Luckily I had all of my settings right so it is running for now, but I am not looking forward to dealing with Neptune again on this issue.

  6. the problem with using filters is that you are reducing the total amount of light hitting the sensor, which means you will have to use a wider aperture. A wider aperture results in less clarity and you may also need to decrease the shutter speed, which also makes it harder to get sharp pictures.

You could probably find a used Nikon D90 for around $300. Add a fast (f1.8) manual 50mm prime lens ($50 used) and I think you will be much happier with the results.

oh and use post processing to remove the excessive blue and you're golden!

Thanks for the camera info. Very insightful.

  7. I'm going to try using all the good advice you guys posted when my lights come on today. If I can get good pics from my gels that would be great. Sounds like my technique needed some refining. The only advice I can't use is turning my blues down. I have MH/T5 so the best I can do is turn T5s off and only use the Radiums. They are still blue heavy.

I'll post a couple pics today if I have luck.

  8. Bummer that didn't work. I thought that Sam (L8 2 Rise) used the gels (kind of an orange color as I recall) with decent results. I've never tried it myself though. Have you got samples of your gel pictures?

I got the assortment pack that had 100s of colors. To be honest I only messed around with them for one evening. Maybe I should look up Sam's thread. I was going of another thread.

  9. So, I am not a camera guy or a person that wants to spend a bunch on camera with an acronym in front.  But I am mad enough at my photos that I need to do my due diligence and see what it would cost to do my corals justice.  They are very photogenic, but my iphone pics suck for the most part.

Does anyone out there have suggestions for a camera that will take cool pics, but not cost a ton of money? I'm looking for personal experience.  Suggestions on everything I would need to take good pics would be much appreciated, I.E. filters, and such.  I have no idea about cameras, so feel free to explain like you are talking to a 5 year old.

FYI - I have tried the theater filter method with the gels.  Didn't work.

  10. ^^^  Beautiful, but that looks like Ice Tort not Cali Tort.  I could be wrong, but I have both. In my tank the Cali has a green base and the Ice has the gold/brown base.

  11. If regular glass has a greenish blueish tint, isn't that what we want? We add supplemental/actinic lighting to achieve this effect no? Man maybe blue glass aquariums are the next big thing. You can start paying me now for royalties. You're welcome ;$

+1. While you were typing I got the patent on blue/green tinted glass. I'll be a gazzillionaire. Haha.
  12. Yea don't use the 4foot shovel as a size indicator lol. It's an optical illusion

I was going to say Wow!!! That tank is like a scuba training facility. Didn't realize you were such a reef pimp.
