  1. It's truly sickening to stroll through the reef section of Congressional. It's said when Petco actually takes better care of their tanks. They're not horrible when it comes to the freshwater portion of their store, which is most of it though. I'd love to see them stop selling saltwater fish and coral and make it all freshwater.

  2. Also known as a convict goby. They get large (up to a foot) rather quickly.

That's what it was sold to me as! A convict!

He's pretty cool, and completely understand the name "engineer" now. He's built so many tunnels, he could have saved the Chilean miners so much faster.

  3. I'll try to get a better picture, but can anyone ID this? I can't remember what I bought it as, and it has gone from probably 2" to 6-7" long in 4 months or so......

  4. I would come visit occasionally if you had a storefront, would be more likely to visit in Frederick than Gaithersburg. I've looked at your corals and prices online and at meetings and been interested but just don't want to bother you at home to buy a couple of corals so I've never been by. Storefronts are tough though, both of the decent stores in Gaithersburg closed in the last few years but they were both mainly freshwater with a little saltwater.

Don't worry, you would not be bothering us at all! We don't mind if you just wanted to schedule a time to even just look around. Shoot Richard a PM to schedule ab appointment.

I don't know much about stores and overhead, I do like the idea of a mobile truck. but the problem would be would you move around or stay put. how would people find you?

We would communicate through social media in advance about locations. That's how food trucks in DC do it, and it seems to work well.

  5. Pretty amazing! That thing is huge! I can only imagine the stink coming off that thing, since it died of natural causes...

Natural causes my butt. Maybe they were stretching their words, considering "lack of oxygen" a natural cause......

  6. WHat I wanted to find out is if I can keep multiple flasher wrasses in my 120. Or if I can keep one male with a harem. The article previously mentioned does not seem to say anything about it. Was wondering if anyone has any intel on it.

Also, will a flasher wrasse wipe out my incredible pod population? Do want to get mandarins in the future so have been building up a very nice pod population in the tank and sump.

I can't comment on multiple flashers, but I can report that I'm busting the notion that a flasher can't be in the same tank as a six line.

As for pods, I haven't seen my McCoskers pick at pods at all yet. And my mandarin seems nicely fat and happy.

  7. Enkay, I just added a mccoskers flasher wrasse to my 56g display and he's my new favorite fish I think.  He had a rough start during the first 24 hours as almost all of my fish picked on him, especially my Coral Beauty, Six Line Wrasse, and Two Spot Hogfish.  That wore off pretty quickly though, and he is not pretty settled in.  Gorgeous and graceful fish, that I'm so glad I got!

  8. i would just do the math.  how much would it cost to operate the store.  how much is your average income now.  how much do you want to earn, and so on. and i'm sure there are bunch of other things to consider.  if the number comes out positive, and the extra work you put in is worth it to you and sustainable...

That's good in theory, but the thing is, if business stays the same as it is right now, it would be pointless to open a store front.  We're just trying to figure out if more people would visit us if we had a legit store front.

  9. I think the real question to have answered would be, are there people out there that haven't come out to see us that WOULD come see us if he had a store front with more inventory, maybe some dry goods, and possibly even fish?  We appreciate all of our regular customers, and are confident that we would have your continued support, as we stand by our product 100%.

  10. That is good advice from Dave. The delivery thing is interesting- you might look into the costs associated with expanding the courier service vs. opening a retail space. Your livestock and photo quality are excellent, so I doubt you'll have trouble selling via internet/photos. I wonder if there would be a market for a food truck style business model for marine fish & coral- announce that you'll be at some convenient location (major shopping center parking lot?) during lunchtime or for a few hours on a weekend, see who else shows up besides your scheduled deliveries. Mobile LFS run out of a Sprinter van; remember, you heard it here first :)

Haha, it's funny you bring up the mobile thing, because we've actually discussed this on the way back from hand picking once. We talked about doing it out of a box truck once a month and parking it somewhere like....... Avast :)

  11. I got some clear mesh from QR on Saturday. I am sure I will have extra if you want to try to make a screen.

I still have a ton of clear mesh.  I had just been waiting to make the screen until I got rid of the HOB skimmer.  I went to make the screen top just now actually and can't find my darn corners!  Off to HD or Lowes in the morning I guess!

nice system setup...how are the wp25s working for you in those tank dimensions?

Thanks! I love the 25's.  In the 24" x 24" frag tank I have the one WP25 all the way in the back of one of the side walls aiming right around 1/3 of the of the way on the opposite facing side.  This makes a nice flow pattern that basically keeps spinning in a circle, bouncing off each wall.  On the display, I have (1) WP25 on the side wall, about 2/3 up from the bottom.  This one is pointed directly across and does a really good job of moving water around.  The MP10 is on the back wall underneath the overflow, aimed at the front glass.  I might switch to a 2nd WP25, but haven't decided yet.

  12. Thanks all. Just to be clear, this fish had a clean bill of health. It was in my possession for about a month, was eating like a hog, and eating everything at that, it was even eating from my hands. Although I'm not sure what the issue was: I can assure you that the variable that led to it's condition was me. I had been observing this fish for a long time, and I believe what happened was a power head, although I don't suppose I'll ever be certain. Either way, it was an expensive lesson learned.

You can't beat yourself up about it, it happens.  And it certainly sounds like a powerhead, but may have been sick and weak before it got nipped.  Who knows, but it's obvious you care about your fish and weren't neglecting it or being overly careless.  Stop doing hard time, as the judge in your case, I rule this an accidental death, and not a homicide.  You are released with a sentence of 1 year probation

  13. Sucks..... I agree, everything I've read have put them on my "Do Not Purchase" list.  Live Aquaria actually lists them as "Expert", and I far from an expert, and never will be.

Losing fish has been the worse thing about this hobby, and is what makes it feel more like real life than "just a hobby".
