  1. Is 28 fish too many for a 265 gal tank?  I already have these fish in there...

    Yellow tang

    Purple tang
    Blue tang
    Bartlett’s anthias
    4-line wrasse
    Blue sided wrasse
    3 Vanderbilt chromis
    2 diamond sleeper gobies
    Cleaner shrimp

And over time would like to add these...

    2 Black White clowns
    Blonde naso tang
    Powder brown tang
    Bi-color angel
    Flame angel
    3 Bartlett’s
    6 blue/green chromis
    2 diamond sleeper gobies
    Blood red fire shrimp

I used to have 19 in the tank and did not seem crowded at all.  Learned the hard way to quarantine fish.  I am slowly restocking the tank w fish and is mostly LPS and softs now but adding some SPS since I got new Radions.  Curious to hear others' opinions on whether that is a good amount or overcrowded.

    Thanks.
  2. I use some orange gel filters from some saltwater website but they are loose sheets and a pain to use so I’d get them in filters that fit the camera. Red filters we use for scuba diving to filter out a lot of blue. So maybe for blue light heavy tanks?

Good info. Thanks a lot. I ordered this a few weeks ago and is on a slow boat from China. It’s for the iPhone and will send some examples....

  3. Would using Instant Ocean Reef Crystals cause a spike in my calcium? Was using the normal version before. Have been dosing calcium and alkalinity but were only raising my Ca by about 5-10 pts a week. Then went from 395 to 440 after a 10% water change with the Reef Crystals.

  4. I went a few weeks ago when it was slow here at work. I agree that the presentation is sketchy but the fish all looked pretty nice. No one came out to help me and no prices anywhere so no comment on that.

  5. Thanks. One more fish died. My little clown. And it's bigger partner looks really sick too now have not been able to set up the QT yet. Don't even know how. Is there anything I should dose the whole tank with or just let this run its course? Same thing is happening to me as you. Fish look fine and then in less than a day are dead. Any advice on what to do without a QT would be much appreciated.

  6. So I got the ViaAqua 300 watt titanium heater in the mail. Tested it in my bathtub yesterday and just put it in my sump. DT temp is 74.3 so I set the heater in the sump to 80. Will see what it takes to get tank up to 76. If no results from the heater in sump, will keep it in DT I guess. It doesn't look that bad.

  7. For what it is worth, I had 3 fish die since Dec 30. A yellow eyed kole, blonde naso, and a coral beauty. It all started about 3 weeks ago when I got a diamond sleeper goby from an LFS. RG1 (zygote2k) helps me with my tank and said he thought the kole tang had ich. Thinks maybe it came from the goby but who knows. I could not see anything so watched it carefully ever since then. It was eating a lot and looked fine to me even up until the morning of the day it died. When that died then I went to observe all the others and noticed the blonde naso and coral beauty were missing. Couple people including RG1 have told me there is a lot of ich and velvet coming out of several wholesalers in LA. I don't QT so I guess this is all my fault but it sucks. I got a QT yesterday and am setting it up this weekend. More to learn for me.

  8. If it is the brown crud on the sand, there are a couple things people told me that worked....

    - Dont use a light on the fuge if you have one. Grows it in the fuge and transfers up to display tank.

    - Lighten up or don't use phytoplankton supplements.

    - Buy a diamond sleeper goby and it will keep the whole sand bed clean. I just got a 2-3 inch one and keeps whole sand bed clean an 85-inch long 265 gal display.

I actually did all of these but If I had to start with one would probably say get the sleeper goby.

  9. Gotcha! Yeah I should have done that but didn't think of it. I will get one this weekend and post it on Monday.

The Sun coral loves the Reef Roids but its favorite is krill. One small piece per flower :)

I have a sun coral too and it does ok without target feeding. Opens up when I feed cyclopeeze or any other coral food. Should I feel bad about not target feeding them? Also, it will hold onto and eat a leaf of seaweed if you drape one over it. But then a fish comes and steals it. Gues you don't have to worry about that.

  10. DDiver,

That 3-side layout is awesome and very similar to mine. You could consider hanging panels from the ceiling or top part of cabinet frame. They would swing out and give you clearance to work and get in on the 3 open sides of the tank. And looks cleaner with no doors or handles. Looks more like a wall than a cabinet. I did the same thing in my house. I will take some pics and send of the inside framing when I get home later. Also u r free to come see it anytime u r in dc. This is all I have on my iPad now.....
