What do you use instead of a skimmer and media reactor? I’m curious to try their new fleece roller for nano tanks but I really don’t mind changing the filter floss from the media basket every few days for pennies..

right now i am not using anything. Just media basket, and heater.

If your vacation is still a few weeks off, I'd suggest at least planning on getting an autofeeder set up in case you're unable to find somebody to hold the fish (e.g., in quarantine) for you.

Worst case scenario. Do you think I should only feed 1 fish every 3-4 days? I have someone to feed it. But that's only thing the person can do. Feed, and make sure ATO is not running empty. I have even a battery powered air pump in the even of power lost. But definitely would be ideal to have someone to hold it for me. Heck I bring an empty 10g lol

Have you thought about having somebody come by to check on the fish a few times a week? Moving a tank into somebody's home seems a bit extreme and disruptive. And asking to move a fish into somebody else's tank seems even more so. Do you have an autofeeder? An auto-topoff with a reservoir of sufficient capacity? These can help ease over even fairly prolonged absences - a couple of weeks easily and more in many cases. But you just can't cut over and run out. You have to ensure that the setup is running smoothly and reliably. I understand that power outages are a risk and that's just something you'll have to gauge as you seek a solution.

Having somebody (you trust) nearby who can check on your tank (at your home) once or twice a week, and who can contact you if there's something amiss is also good. Then, line up somebody with more experience to serve as backup in the event that something does go wrong.

I was planning to move the fish only :) The corals can survive on their own with ATO and auto light. I am good with the tank. It's just the fish.

  5. Is there anyone can take care of my clownfish when I am out of the country for 3 weeks? I can bring my clown to your house. She has been living by herself since 6 months when her mate die due to power outage in my house.

I have her for almost 2 years

    From 11/29 to 12/22 or 23

  6. After last night power lost, I should be looking into getting a small portable power station LiFePo4 to run my tiny 9W return pump...any suggestion? I could go the DIY route but I like clean plug in and play option.

Luckily i have those battery operate pump!

I am currently using reefnutrition phytofeast. I get the non-live one and they usually have a longer shelf life (3-6 months ???). The effort is not worth culturing your own if you aren't using a whole lot. I know some local reefers have started to culture and sell them for good prices too if you are looking for live sources.

Culturing would be a PITA if I am only using very small amount. I want to give it a try to see if make any different. Know anyone in DC/VA side that sell them for small amount?

Which brand are you using? I found that each company has their own recommended dosage.

Not using anything now. Exploring the option since My tank is so tiny and hate to buy so much then 80% goes to waste or culturing my own? Or buy small amount from local peeps? What you think?

  9. I see they are recommended to dose about 15ml for every 50g. Based on that number, my 6/7g tank only need a little. Do you know guys where I can find a 12oz or less bottle? :) Since this stuff has a shelf life less than 3 months

every place i found has 16oz for sale that would last me 7 months! LOL

I’d be happy to babysit the tank for you at my house for free. All I’d ask is that you bring it to me and then pick it up when you’re back. I’m in Alexandria.

The only caveat is I’d have to pre-clear with my wife, which I don’t think would be a problem!

Cool thanks! :) I will definitely keep you in mind once I have the vacation plan if we can travel :)

I wouldn’t hire a company to come out for a ten gallon. But your close to reef escape in fairfax. Maybe see if you can bring your tank to them for them to babysit while your gone. Might be way cheaper then having them send someone to your house several times per week.

also depending on what you have in it, you could always sell the livestock and then start it again when you come back.

true that..i might just get someone to babysit my clowns then again it won't happened till maybe Aug

How big is the nano?  Inhabitants, where u located?

wow! 4 weeks is pretty long time to be away from a tank, esp. a nano. I usually have auto feeder and large ato reservoir with enough water for 2 weeks. but I have a large system (450 gallons).

IMO, your best option would be getting a maintenance company. I'd not ask my friend to take care of my tank for that long. you will likely end up losing a friend  Good luck!.

LOL yea..i know! Planning to fly to NZ to see my family if we are still ok to fly after vaccination

  13. So, if I am planning to go away for 4 weeks (hopefully), what is my option to take care of my nano tank?

    1) Ask a friend to come by and feed a little food and check ATO water tank every 4 days ..so he only needs to come by 6/7 times

    2) Hired a tank maintenance company? How much this normally run?

    3) Get a member to baby sit my tank by me bring the entire tank over to their house! LOL...and buy them a nice bottle of whiskey after
