  1. BTW everyone I am currently looking for a place to rent!

Have an unfinished basement that you want to finish but also make some money on?  Or just have an extra room to rent out to another addicted reef keeper?    I am looking for a room/basement to rent that would also allow a largeish aquarium. I am eyeing that 135g Starphire cube.  I am a skilled handyman as well as a reefkeeper of 8 years.  I am 24 years old. I am a Java Developer for REI systems so I will mainly be coming home at about 6-7pm every night.  I am a fairly clean person.  I am fairly nerdy.  I like PC gaming, Frisbee golf, skiing/snowboarding, reefkeeping if that was not a given, and a bunch of other things.  I am a non smoker drug free person. And I love dogs but do not have one.

But If you have a basement I am more than willing to help you finish the basement if you provide the materials. I am very handy from framing to electrical to plumbing.

not sure where REI is located, but the townhouse next door to me is for rent. they are just finishing up a full renovation. its in stafford county though. again, don't know how far that is from your job. i chose to live here cuz i get a full th for the price of a 1-bedroom up in ffx county. but i don't mind driving. Oh, and welcome to WAMAS!

  2. the national zoo is across the street. have we talked to them about hosting a large exhibit at macna? or the baltimore aquarium? these are both really cool and educational. i'm sure someone has thought about it, i just hadn't seen any info yet.

  3. awesome, thanks for the offers. sorry it took awhile to respond, been a bit busy.

I am just outside fredericksburg and am sure i can provide rubble. Im in bowling green

sounds great. lemme know when you are available and i can drive out. i am free just about any afternoon.

This is going to be a sweet tank!  If you ever make it near woodbridge I can hook you up with either rubble or algae.  Let me know.

jason you rock. do you still have those frags? tank is about ready to add a bit of color.

  4. Where did you find the black sand that doesn't have the magnet issue

Sorry, should have clarified. The epoxy itself encapsulates the individual grains, I then placed it in a form to mimic the shape of the biocube and it cured into a single large piece. The final product looks like a 1" thick black rice crispy treat. Because it is all stuck together, grains getting stuck in the magnet are no longer an issue. Once in the tank it looks like a thin layer of sand, and my powerhead shoots directly onto the sandbed and prevents detritus with no flurries.

Any pics of this? Would love to see

Yeah I posted the project in my thread awhile back, but I never posted finished pics, this pic shows it before I place in tank. The dimples are to hold the rockwork in place.  The second pic shows the scape. I did rotate the big rock about 2 inches to the right in the pic to fit right in the dimple.

  5. I have black sand in my biocube. the pros are it looks great when its clean. the cons are that certain grains do stick to magnets, the shiny parts, and it does have to be kept clean. the white sands can hide the detritus and poo and stuff. the black sand can't. on a side note, i just upgraded to an epoxied black sand. this got rid of the magnet issues along with the high flow issues i was having. and since every grain is encased in epoxy, not nitrate/phosphate issues.

  6. ok so update time...

i have the tank resealed, no leaks, the sandbed epoxied, and the new rockscape. tell me what you guys think...

also, i am in need of some dirty rock to reseed my tank. if anyone near stafford/f'burg has a bit of rubble that i can have, that would be great.

  7. here is a look at the clam island. it is roughly the diameter of a baseball with a central ridge and and a depression on each side. i plan to attach two maximas. i took a ton of pics but none really show the shape of the lr. too much light i think. i will try and take some more shots later.

  8. haha. i do want to go bigger. i think a 50 breeder would be great. but not in the cards for me at this point.

i already resealed the biocube last nite. i used black silicone from aqueon. so i could possibly refill tonite, but i'm gonna wait. i will water test tomorrow afternoon and leave it for 24 hours. i am also putting together an epoxied sandbed. they call it a false/fake sandbed, but i don't know why-its real sand...i dunno. but yeah, its gonna be awesome.

also gonna use a single totoka branch for my main lr formation with a small clam island.

  9. yeah i did a little digging and found that i could use a corrugated plastic sheet. super lightweight and cheap. so i went to lowes and picked one up. i already cut it to size/shape and picked up the recommended epoxy. i am baking the sand now to make sure it is dry, like real dry.

    this that stuff...

my indo-pacific black sand ready to bake...

  10. am looking to do an epoxied sand bed with some indo-pacific black sand. i had to reseal my biocube and so i thought...its empty so why not. i love the look of black sand, but now that i have it i have learned that when it gets 'dirty' it all shows. detritus and sediment are very clear to see against the black. so this should prevent that.  i have seen these in action and i really like the result. i haven't seen one with black sand though...so it might look like dookie, but i'm gonna try all the same.

anyway, so i have a biocube 14 and need a piece of plexiglass or hdpe or abs cut to the shape of the tank. was looking for a shop in stafford or prince william counties that could cut for me.

    where i got the idea...

any ideas or referrals would be great.

  11. ok update time. i got a biocube 14 setup with ecoxotic leds and let the tank run, i have learned through many, many trials and uh oh moments to take it slow. i let the tank age and began buying frags from my local store, pac east aquaculture, things were progressing nicely. i got an opportunity to move back to nova and bam now i am back in f'burg. bad news is that today my tank sprung a leak. good news, gives me time to try a new build. i will be resealing tonite and rescaping this weekend. i am also planning on adding more leds. i have 2 12k panorama modules and a blue/magenta stunner. the color is crisp white. its nice, but i want more blue to make the coral pop. so i think i will be adding 2 445nm stunners and switching the combo stunner for a 403nm uv strip.

    the sad tank...
