  1. I like it a lot. The corals in the frag tank look so promising. They are gonna look so awesome once you add them to the main tank. Love the montipora collection.

Thanks man I really appreciate the kind words. I had a problem with my bio pellets but I removed them from my system and things are making a strong comeback. Sry it took so long to get back to your post had no idea someone commented on it.

  2. Getting to the cause of these things can be tricky and changing too many things at one time can cause more harm. Get your Alk up and keep it up and stable. Watch your Ca and Mg levels closely when dosing 2part. It can creep up on you or shift. It can also cause salinity to creep up slowly, so look into that too. As for PH, are you running a light that turns on at night when your lights shut off? If so, how large is your sump? If the sump is too small, it may not be enough water volume exposed to light at night and could cause the lower PH swings. Also look at your flow. Are your sps possible losing tissue due to damage from too much flow or from sitting in one constant direct of flow? All are things to look at, but it's best to keep the tank stable and see if things start to look better before making a ton of changes at one time. Also, you might want to cut the tips off to prevent algae from growing on the tips. What skimmer are you running? You can try getting more air into the skimmer to keep the PH up too.

Thanks man I really appreciate all te info you just provided. All my levels were very stable just lowered my alk because of the tips bleaching on me. Now my alk is back up at about 10. The bio pellets have been off for 2 days now and I have noticed a huge difference in the tank sps are out more than they have been in long time. I'm now getting great polyp extension. I guess the thing is everyone's tank is different and just didn't work good in mine. Thank you all that contributed to this post.

  3. Well today I was looking at my tank and slowly watching the tips on a select few of my acros start to bleach and decided that's it and removed my bio pellets I hope I made the right move. I guess time will tell.

  4. Some others have touched on O2 vs CO2 levels in our houses, maybe you should keep the alk at 9-11 to keep the pH higher because of the amount of CO2 in your home.

Also, get some standard from origami for yopur alk test...it may be lower than the test says

The strange part is I used to keep my alk between 10 and 11 dog and my ph from the beginning has always been 7.9. O have also tried many different products to keep it higher. It would go up for a day then drop back down to the 7.9. So I dunno if I should try and remove some of the bio pellets or pull it out of my system for good. I'm using salifert for my test kits except for my ph that's API. Thanks again for your input.

  5. Have you done anything that would increase light on the corals such as new bulbs, added carbon, or done a large water change?

No I have been running the same light it's a 6 bulb t5 over a 38. The light sits about 3 inches above water. I did have carbon but removed t when I started running the bio pellets.

  6. nitrate at 5ppm doesn't sound so ultra low to me.

do dose a 2 part or 3 part?

if so when did you test in relation to dosing.

if so when did you notice problems in relation to dosing?

i have found that once any scleractinian corals grow, that alk swings and pH swings between dosing causes problems.

Yea my nitrates even with bio pellets has never gone below 2.5. Right now I am dosing brightwell reef code a and b. But I have not been dosing part b due to I wanted to get my alk down lower. I also dose magnesion because it seems to drop lower than the others. As for my ph it likes to stay around 7.9 to 8.0. Thanks for your comments

  7. Most likely you are seeing the result of your alkalinity hovering around 10 to start. Once you get to an ULNS alkalinity becomes an issue. I experienced the same problem with SPS dying. I ditched the bio pellets and all carbon dosing, everything looks better than ever now. A good indicator of nutrient levels are soft corals, if they look pale, most likely you are starving the corals. Did your SPS start to lighten up in color before you noticed the burned tips? Heavy skimming and frequent water changes are the best methods of nutrient control, in my opinion.

Thanks for the info. I have been thinking about pulling it off my system. But I also don't want to pull it before it gets to completely establish it's self. Thanks again.

  8. Hey guys hoping some of you may be able to help me. I'm running bio pellets about 200 ml in a 70 gallon system and after adding the last 50ml I have been experiencing some bleached tips on some of my acros. This has been happening over the past week or so. My alk was up around 10.2 which is now down to 8.0. I was wondering if I should remove some or I there is anything else I can do. Here are my parameters as of about 5 min ago.

    Nitrate 5

    Calcium 425

    Mag 1320

    Alk 8.0

    Ph 8.0

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  9. It is probably a M. meleagris.

Just make sure that your hospital tank has a sand bed of a couple of inches when you do it, since as you know, these fish bury themselves in the sand every night.

(mine seems to "wake" an hour after the lights turn on and buries herself about an hour before they shut off)

Yea they are really cool. Mine comes out and goes under the sand bed about the same time everyday. Thanks again.

  10. What kind of leopard wrasse do you have?

Most can be kept in small groups, you may see some aggression when one of them begins to turn into a male, but is is not usually that bad. Female leopard wrasses are usually pretty peaceful with most everything, males are usually peaceful with everything but other males. You could add more, just remember that MOST leopard wrasses have internal parasites when imported, running a round or two of prazipro is a great idea.

Thanks Chad for your reply I appreciate it. I have I guess a standard leopard wrasse she is all white with black spots and some coloration on her fins. Beautiful fish I really enjoy her. I think I'm going to try and find another female. I know that you can buy a male but would love to see the transformation into a male. I will put the new on in my hospital tank for a few weeks to make she it's ok. Thanks again for your input.

  11. Try a peppermint hogfish.....they have great personality and are constantly moving around the tank......

Thanks man will have to check it out. O actually bought one new fish tonight got the blue Pygmy angle with the yellow on the face. It's a cool little fish.

  12. Thank you all for the suggestions alot if very cool looking fish. Is it ok to put more than one wrasse in a tank. Also I have a small female leopard wrasse can I add another and will one turn into a male. Thanks

  13. Yeah they can be a little messy but if you get them to breed the male will hold the eggs in his mouth to protect them. Unique and cool!

Thats def cool sounds alot like chiclids which I used to breed years ago.

  14. Check out the Yellowheaded Jawfish.

Thanks for the suggestion man. The funny part is I did have one in this tank but got rid of it. The only thing I didn't like was he would get a mouth full of sand swim up to the top of the water than let it all out. Very nice looking fish just a little messy.

  15. Just recently traded some of my fish to trockafella for some coral and now have plenty of room for some new ones. I'm looking for some not so common fish to add to my 38 gallon. Just want something you don't see everyday. Right now I have 2 false percs and a leopard wrasse. Would love to hear some ideas. By the way trockafella great guy to deal with and a very nice tank. Thanks for any suggestions.

  16. Yesterday was a big day for my lonely Ocellaris. I added a second Ocellaris to keep him company and I must admit I was a little anxious at first. After 10 mins of trembling and chasing, they seemed to get along well. This morning I watched them swim together, along each other and sharing the leather coral that the older one was hosting for a little while now.

Another new addition was a handsome green orange urchin. He seems to be exploring his new home enthusiastically. My calcium levels are pretty stable for a couple of days, an I am not even dozing anything. SPS look happy but I am not sure if they are using the calcium. My magnesium level is 1200ppm. Waiting for my brightwell magnesion to arrive.

    Ideas? Suggestions?

Your system is really starting to come together. It's all looking very nice. The brightwell magnesion is a great product I use it myself.

  17. With the two switches you have options on how to use them. I use one switch in my sump, the other in my ato bucket (so the pump doesnt run dry).. Not sure which way you were planning to do it, just thought i would toss that little nugget out there..

That's cool man thanks. Always appreciate input.

  18. I have the exact setup and it has been working flawlessly. Double sensor is a plus. Maxijet pump attachment for hose has a small hole on the side that works well to disturb the water in the 5 gallon bucket when on to top off main tank. This seems to prevent any bacterial bio film formation on the surface of the water in the bucket.

This is the setup I will probably go with. I really like the idea of two switches. Thanks for your input man.

  19. Assembled the SUMP last night. Now it is curing happily when I go get the return pump. I am going for a Mag-Drive 3 with 350gph. Here are some pics of the SUMP as of now:

What do you guys think? Middle is the Refugium. Small but I am planning on keeping some LR rubble and Cheato there. Flow goes from right to left and there is the bubble trap before the return pump chamber because I am planing on setting the PS up in the Refugium. Also, I created the first chamber to use it for carbon filtration. I am going to make some shelves from egg crates and rest the carbon and other filter media on them directly under the HOB flow from the tank.

    Ideas? Suggestions??

    Thanks!

Off to get the pump now!

PS: How long to let the silicone cure? It says 48hrs on the tube but after 12 some hrs, it already is very solid.

Looks goo man nice job. I would let the silicone set up for at least 24 hrs that's what I have always done.

  20. I've run redundant float switches for several years. But, I'll tell you, in those years, I've had to replace three of them when they failed closed (pump running). If you use float switches, definitely make sure that you have a redundant switch set a little higher so that if the lower one fails, you have a back up.

Like trockafella, I like the Avast ATO hookup for it's clean look and easy adjustment. But I also like it because the electromechanical parts of the design are well away from the wet conditions that cause these other switches to fail more quickly.

By the way, you can buy Avast products at Fins and Feathers in Ashburn. So, if you want to hold one in your hand to see it firsthand, go there and take a look.

Thanks for your input man it's very appreciated. I would like to support advast I do already have on of their reactors but I also like the idea of having 2 switches. Thanks again.
