Disaster Planning

Planning for Hurricanes and Other Natural Disasters That Can Snuff Out Your Reef.

My Recent Failure and My New Approach

Abstract: You've thought about it. You've maybe even bought a generator, battery back ups, battery operated pumps. You'll never have to use them, but you're ready, right? When the "big one" comes will you stay home? Evacuate? Have you thought about all the things that could happen if you can't get back home for a day? 2 days? more? If the power is out for a few days? a week? 2 weeks? If there's no gas available? I've lived through about half a dozen Hurricanes so far and have seen my share of success and failure in the preparedness camp. This lecture covers a range of things you can do to protect your reef tank during extended power outages at any time of year, and what I'm doing now that I failed big time in Hurricane Irma. Not meant to be a downer, this lecture is intended to inspire thoughtful planning to avoid losing the ecosystem you've given so much time and love to.

Wow. Fantastic. Really has some output capacity. At 750W continuous power, 1500W peak power. Sinewave output. That's some serious backup.  Thanks, Johnny!

Here's the link for anybody who wants to learn more about this unit.

I just went by Kilmer Middle School (the site of this next meeting) today. We'll be in the lecture hall (Room G101) just inside and to the left of Door 15. Kilmer Middle is on Wolf Trap Road, just off Gallows Road in Vienna. Take the first right into the parking lot there and continue straight down the side of the building. Door 15 will come up on your left and is well marked. Members can start arriving as early as 1 PM. Thanks.
