ReefCrest 9 gallon drop off nano

I haven't really posted anything about this tank in a long time. I'd like to share my little slice of the reef which happens to be a species specific tank dedicated to rock flower anemones. The tank it's self has been up and running since December 2015 and I haven't had any problems at all since setting it up. It's been a joy to watch this tank mature over the past 14 months and it's growing to the point that I have ordered a reef crest 17 from Adam at artfully acrylic. It will continue to sit on my kitchen counter behind my sink so I can enjoy it while I cook and clean every day.

Equipment: about as basic as you can get lol no fish and only the bio load of inverts makes this a simple easy to care for ecosystem. Simple 1 gallon a week water change is all that is required.

Artfully Acrylic RC9 tank with drawer

Tunze nano auto top off

100 watt heater

Quite one Return pump

Ai Prime nano LEDs with light tree

Live stock:

No fish. None zilch zippo

10 lbs almost of live rock

About 50+ rock flower nems

2 snails Mexican and Asterina

1 emerald crab

1 hermit crab

7 frags of random zoanthids

Caribsea live sand medium course grade

I chose to go fishless because of the volume of water I have would make it less manageable for me maintenance wise. I wanted the bare minimum and also wanted to maximize the focus on the rock flower nems in the tank. I've always been amaze with the variety of colors these nems grow. I started with 24 rock nems and over the course of a year they have almost tripled in numbers thriving on a diet of raw shrimp once a month and invert detritus. It's amazing that the spawns come in different colors and patterns than the originals and I'm curious on how many will actually grow in a confined tank. They don't seem to be bothered by over crowding and in fact they seem to be happier in groups thank isolated on the rock or sand bed. I do have zoanthids in this system and that's because I have a soft spot for zoas and I have my favorites on the sand bed to eat up the extra space where nems don't grow. Overall this is a fun tank and very colorful when the blues pop on every evening. Deffinently providing that wow factor when I have visitors.

Last but not least some pictures. I'll post only daylight pictures to show how much color these nems provide. If I post the atinic pics your eyes would.melt from the glow... lol kidding I'll post some blue pics tonight.

Those are massive! Have they been breeding for you at all? I've been following a thread on r2r about people breeding them.

Wow, this is pretty cool. The AI Prime is doing a pretty decent job there. Love the concept. I'm surprised you don't have any porcelain crabs in there!

thanks guys for the kind words. since the beginning of joining WAMAS I have built many systems and I think this is by far the most enjoyable because of the location, colors, ease of care, and the simple fact it surprises me every week with new nems popping out with different colors and designs.

  • 6 months later...

So the tank had an upgrade! The nems are all in another tank while I get this one to cycle. I want a LPS tank with zoanthids on the Tonga branches. a82a87464bf829ac7a09ca5224adcf5e.jpgcb5401b4653b69e51232893acfb28305.jpg

those nems are awesome! I can't wait to see how this looks in a few months.

I'm only going to include 3 or 4 of the high end ultras. I want this tank to have a variety of corals this tank. I know someone has some collector zoas and acans for me to buy. Also will be looking for some Orange and yellow sunset plate corals.
