  1. So I wanted to start a discussion about how we as a club prefer to export our nutrients. I want to see if there is something someone is doing than the rest of us may have not thought of that is bringing them success. So for the plan for my 150g cube, My plan is to do both a traditional refugium and at ATS. ATS being for the primary nutrient export and the traditional refugium for growing decorative red algaes. In the past I had a extremely high bioload 104g seahorse tank that I used a remote 70g tank as a refugium growing all kinds of caulerpa for my export. I was feeding 4 cubes of frozen food a day on this tank and it kept my display pristine. I was also breeding Yellow watchman gobies in the 70g because there was such a huge pod population in it. What are you running? And do you have any cool things you do special with your tank?
  2. Hello, I have a 20 gallon nano reef and was wondering if this light would work well to grow macro algae (chaeto) in my hob fuge. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M7Y726V/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Has anyone used this light or a light similar to this to grow macro algae? What were the results. Thank you,
  3. Hello all, I'm looking for a WAMAS member who has drilling equipment and is willing to teach me how to drill. I have a Mr Chic Aqua 5mm rimless I'm making a refugium with. I would like to drill on the side for overflow and return 1" bulkheads. I have the bulkheads. I would also like to learn by drilling some scrap glass I can bring, or if you're confident in me, just drilling my tank. I know the cheaper drill bits from BRS are disposable after a while, so I'm looking for someone who wouldn't mind let me use one or has a permanent bit. Thank you!
  4. I have a bunch of items that have been cluttering up our shop and need to go. Great deal to move them out fast. 6. I'm hoping for help on two semi-related issues. First, the plumbing. I have two tanks with CPR overflows (a 55 FOWLR with a CS50 and my 75 DT with a CS100/102). I want to re-do the plumbing and connect to the threaded exterior of the bulkhead on each of these boxes; however, I can't seem to find anywhere that gives the size the bulkhead in terms of what I need. In other words, I'm looking for what size female coupler / adapter I need to connect the threaded bulkhead with the piping going downstream. It could be threaded / slip or threaded / threaded. I also know the CS50 inner diameter is 1/4" less than the on the other CPR boxes, but I'm not certain if that's true for the exterior threads. I don't want to disassemble the plumbing until I'm ready to proceed to completion, and can't figure out another way to determine the sizes I'm looking for. Does anyone out there know? I wish I could just drill the tanks, but they're tempered so that's not an option. Second, the fuge. Recently I've noticed my chaeto isn't growing like it used to, although the GHA in the tank itself I need to knock back periodically tells me the nutrients are there. It seem that some of it develops bubbles (probably oxygen, which ought to be a good thing), floats to the surface, and then shades the rest of the growing area. What lighting cycles are folks using (x hours/day, concurrent or counter-cycle to main lighting)? Also, does anyone run additional circulation / flow in their 'fuge beyond the regular through flow? I've seen the "swirling ball of chaeto" videos, and while it's certainly attractive at one level I suspect the 'pods would be less thrilled. So, I'm wide open to the collective wisdom of WAMAS. Thanks in advance!

  9. So I went digging around in my refugium today to see what kind of critters I had and to inventory chaeto and noticed that my sand bed has compacted to the point of concrete. I lightly chipped at it with a screw driver and it is really hard. What do I do? Help Please!!!
  10. So I'm finally ready to move from the HOB 'fuge to one in my sump with about three times the volume. Moving the chaeto is easy; however, there's a thick layer of sediment (sand, mud, detritus, etc) in the bottom of the HOB 'fuge. I'd like to keep whatever pods and other beneficial critters are in there, but would rather get rid of all the junk that will just keep trying to raise my nitrates/phosphates. Any suggestions?
  11. It looks like the Aliens have invaded my refugium. What the heck is this thing? In addition to its appearance, it is slimy feeling and enjoys living on the dark side of the rock.
