  1. Soooo, I am very new to the hobby. I have met a bunch of awesome people already and I am drinking through the fire hose. Below you will see my tank. I have 2 cannister filters now. I have a EHEIM Classic 600 and an Fluval FX6. I have some Amazon wave makers, heater, and light. I am planning to get some high end lights before the month is out so I can be ready for corals soon as I am done getting my system full of bacteria and running steady for some time. I have two clownfish and plan to add more fish this week. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
  2. THANK YOU one more time to my WAMAS hosts and all who attended the meeting over the weekend. You guys have an incredible club and it's always an honor to come out; you serve as a model for how other clubs could, hypothetically, succeed. You were all a great audience, and I truly appreciate the compliments I received both personally and online following the presentation, particularly since I did somehow manage to take a 90 minute talk and make it 75 with interspersed questions (I consider that a success!!). That said, I am always open to any suggestions, questions, and critiques. Find me here, find me via CORAL Magazine, or through my personal online retail websites www.MiniWaters.fish As promised for all who attended (and even those that couldn't make it), these are the links to the online versions of the 3-part presentation I gave over the weekend at the WAMAS meeting. These files are updated as time permits to always add the latest information and advancements. They should be considered as "living documents" and taken "as-is"; there's a fair amount of speculation involved, particularly when looking deeper into what species might be lurking out there, and how the genetics may actually work! They are by no means *perfect*. 3. WAMAS Members, it's 4:15 AM as I type this, and I'm less than 2 hours from hopping on a plane in Duluth, MN, to take two flights to get to the Washington DC region so I can, once again, come attend an exciting WAMAS meeting! If I can travel over 1000 miles and spend a day in airports to come see all of you, please do me the honor of driving a half hour (or hour and a half?) to come check out all that's going on at this meeting on Saturday! The club has posted all sorts of details here - http://wamas.org/forums/topic/83123-saturday-october-21-fall-2017-meeting-matt-pedersen-on-clownfish/ Now...I must warn you, Copps asked me to give my 3-part clownfish talk, which is normally a total of 90 minutes. But they're only giving me an hour to make it happen. So...I'm going to blaze through it...you will see more clownfish eye candy than you knew existed. Wild fish, emerging genes you've likely not seen, and hybrids up the yin yang!!!! (if you're into that sort of thing). And, you might even see your club leadership break out the hook and pull me off stage! I'll be blunt, Clownfish ARE the guppy of the marine aquarium hobby now. I mean, I've run out of appendages to count the number of elementary school "clownfish breeding" projects and programs being started around the country. Today's kids....it's clownfish, not guppies! Of course, how many of us were, at one time or another, ENTHRALLED with fancy guppies? Come on, you can admit it, this is a #safespace I'm looking forward to seeing you all this weekend! I may not always remember your name, but I *usually* remember a face. Now...I've lost about 70 lbs. since you all last saw me...I don't feel like I look any different, but a lot of folks do...so you might not recognize me! Low-Carb High-Fat diet for the win...literally fixed all my health issues! Out with the sugar, IN WITH THE BACON!!!! Thanks greatly to WAMAS for inviting me to come out! I'll do my darndest to overload you with clownfish but not bore you all to tears!!! And by the way, it's a delight to be packing shorts. Please refer to the attached photo I took earlier this evening. Matt P.

  5. Hello. I am currently designing a marine biology research project for my school's senior lab concerning the impact of ocean warming on marine fish. Specifically, I'm planning on studying the effect of thermal stress on the growth of clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris). In order to observe noticeable changes in growth, I'd need to use rather young clownfish in the experiment. I am planning to attempt breeding my own clownfish for experimental purposes. However, due to the unpredictability of the captive breeding process, I would also need to purchase a few juveniles from outside sources to assure that I can record some base data. Does anyone know of possible places where I could find very young clownfish for this purpose? I can assure that the clownfish will not be harmed at any time. Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
  6. I'll be entering my school's oceanography lab this fall and will be needing a research project. I'm planning on focusing my project on clownfish breeding. However, I have never bred marine fish before. I currently have a mated pair of DaVinci clownfish that have been laying eggs repeatedly for almost as long as I've had them. I also have a breeding tank that attaches to the back of the nano tank with the adult DaVinci clowns. My main concern is getting a steady supply of rotifers started to feed the fry once they hatch. I've heard that this and other aspects of breeding can be challenging, so any advice on how to get started would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  7. Hey all, So for starters I have had my clownfish for over a year now and they paired up in the beginning and they became male and female in a few months and that is how they had been for a while. Well, for whatever reason the female clownfish stopped growing relatively early on and the male clown continued to grow and (I suspect) became a female. Now, the suspected ex-male clownfish is larger and constantly bullying my smaller female and forcing it to jump out of the water and stay on the surface 24/7. The female is looking skinnier and skinnier and I don't know what to do. The ex-male bully is not bothering any of the other fish and is focusing all of its time on bullying the smaller female. I am relatively new to the trade and I need help! TLDR: Might have two female clowns and one of them does NOT like the other one
  8. I like taking pics of my duncan lol... These are all with my Nikon 3200 under my nanobox at about 16k. Can't forget this guy Or this one... And of course, little baby Sunny... New baby ricordia popped out of nowhere on my live rock earlier this summer... One last shot of the duncan
  9. I have a 14g biocube running and i was wondering if a clarkii will be able to get along with an ocellaris clownfish. If size matters I believe the ocellaris to be about two inches and the clarkii to be about one inch. I also have one fire red shrimp and corals in here if that matters at all. opinions?
  10. Anyone have ideas on how to get clownfish to STOP hosting in a chosen location? Our pair of false percula clowns took up residence in our Aussie Duncan colony a few months back, and the Duncan clearly doesn't appreciate their presence. In the past, generally either the tentacles would be widely extended in the flow, the individual polyp mouths were generally visible, or both (see first two photos, below). Now, though, we almost never see either of these two conditions; the duncan spends almost all of its time relatively buttoned-up (see third photo below). Previously, we had clowns hosting in our large frogspawn, which didn't seem to phase it or them at all. In addition, our RBTA has been growing well and I think it could probably handle them at this point, if they'd ever deign to move on (bottom photo). Any suggestions on gently evicting them that won't hurt either them or the Duncan? Thanks.

Picked up this ocellaris from Quantum Reefs today. Can't say enough how awesome this place is! These guys are great, they really care about your tank!
  16. Hi all, I am hoping for a bit of advice regarding my Ocellaris Clownfish. I started my 28g Nano Cube with a single clownfish. Soon after I added a second. The first (Clown A) is about an inch and a half long while the second (Clown B) is a good bit smaller - maybe coming in around an inch. The two have never particularly gotten along together. Clown A seems generally disinterested in being around Clown B and often chases it around the tank aggressively. This went on for a few months and no progress was made toward the two pairing or even getting along. I began to feel bad for the little guy who was usually shunned to a corner in the back of the tank so I decided to get a third clown (Clown C), thinking that whichever one of his mates he got along with I would keep and the other I would hopefully sell to one of you fine folks. It has been a few weeks now and I have seen some strange behavior and would like your opinion on which to keep and which to get rid of. Clown C is smaller than Clown A, the aggressive one but larger than Clown B, the submissive one. While Clown C is nowhere near as aggressive to the little guy as Clown A is, he does still regularly chase Clown B away/around the tank. However, recently I have noticed Clown C twitching around the little Clown B and form what I have read that is a sign of submissiveness and/or an interest in mating usually performed by the male of the species (am I right on that?). Also from what I have read, males are typically smaller in size and more submissive than their female counterparts which seems odd given Clown C is larger and occasionally aggressive toward Clown B. To make things even more complicated, I have also witnessed Clown C twitching around the larger Clown A - although to a much more limited extent. As I paid more attention, I have only seen this twice. Clowns A and C seem to spend more time together now - leaving Clown B on its own for most of the day. However, Clown C does seem to like and twitch quite a bit at the little Clown B. Clown B is usually frightened or wary of any interaction when this happens. With all that said, which two do I keep? Does the new Clown C seem like a male, twitching at both the dominant Clown A as well as the smaller submissive Clown B who are both likely female? Any advice would be much appreciated. If I have omitted anything of importance, let me know and I will try to fill in the gaps. Thanks!
