  2. So I wanted to start a discussion about how we as a club prefer to export our nutrients. I want to see if there is something someone is doing than the rest of us may have not thought of that is bringing them success. So for the plan for my 150g cube, My plan is to do both a traditional refugium and at ATS. ATS being for the primary nutrient export and the traditional refugium for growing decorative red algaes. In the past I had a extremely high bioload 104g seahorse tank that I used a remote 70g tank as a refugium growing all kinds of caulerpa for my export. I was feeding 4 cubes of frozen food a day on this tank and it kept my display pristine. I was also breeding Yellow watchman gobies in the 70g because there was such a huge pod population in it. What are you running? And do you have any cool things you do special with your tank?
  3. Hi all -- I was in conversations with Pure Reef Systems to get a custom PVC sump made, but the owner is on vacation - potentially indefinitely so I need a new option. Does anyone know of local(ish) builders that do tanks or sumps in PVC? Dimensions I'm looking for are 70x24x24, and PVC will definitely be strong than acrylic. (I don't want to be talked into acrylic) Anyone have recommendations?
  4. Hi All, I needed some advice on getting a LED light for growing chaeto on my sump! Currently I'm using daylight CFL bulb (5000 k) (I think its 12 Watt) which is not helping and I was thinking about getting a 12 Watt red 660nm LED light bulbs for growing flower from Amazon has any one have experience with using this type of light originally designed for plants Money is always an issue so I need a cheaper alternate as well Any advice would be highly appreciated

  6. Hi, Just curious if anyone has a recommendation where to buy cut glass for a sump? Preferably near Falls Church? Lowe's is a bit out of the way. We have Home Depot nearby but it's hard to find help there, especially on the weekends. I would assume this isn't something people would mail order yet? Thanks for looking.

  8. Okay so this weekend I want to get the sump for my 75gal rebuild done. There is literally too much info on sump design and baffles etc(most of it is conflicting. First do I go glass or acrylic baffles in a glass sump? Another WAMAS member pointed me towards glass. Second what glass thickness should I go with? Lastly I can cut the glass myself, but Home Depot and Lowes, at least near me, don't have a great selection of thickness, any one have somewhere they recommend? Most DIY builds I've seen, people are using 1/4 inch thick. Thanks for the advice guys and gals!
  9. Been a long time lurker, but finally decided to take the post plunge. This past weekend I had a seal fail in the bottom on my 90 gallon tank, so I took it as a sign to upgrade to a 125. I currently have all of my livestock/coral being housed by a friend so I can get all of my plumbing and stand finished up this week. I will be using a 40g breeder as my new sump, just need to get the glass or acrylic cut (know of anyone around here that can be of help?). I've got a slew of questions, so bear with me . Aquascaping: What layout/design would be best for a 72 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 23 3/8 tank? I am running an MP40w ES and an MP 10w ES for flow. Is there anyone here on WAMAS that is an aquascaping guru near Bunker Hill, WV I could pick the brain of? I am also considering ordering some pukani rock from BulkReefSupply as it looks the most porous around. What are your thoughts? Bare bottom: I have done sand on my last few tanks, but want something different this time. Has anyone used tile or other material to cover the bottom of their bare tank to give it a textured look and to protect the glass? Reactor and/or return pump: I am looking to power my reactors with 1 pump and split the flow with valves. What would be a recommended pump to either do only my 3 reactors, or to do the 3 reactors as well as the return to the display? I was looking into the mag drives, but was unsure of the recommended flow rates. Livestock: Since this is essentially a brand new start, I am looking to do something unique with this tank. Any suggestions of a specific coral/fish to keep? (I am a Zoa/LPS fan) Any other assistance is much appreciated
  10. About 3 weeks ago I removed my Skimmer out of my sump and Cleaned that bad boy really well removing all the pieces apart then put it back together. I also vaccumed all the water out from the skimmer compartment and put new fresh water in. Since then my skimmer is not producing that nasty dark foam that used to. What is going on ?? I understand the skimmer needs some time to break in again but it's been about 3 weeks since I cleaned. It's a SW Skimmer btw. Any thoughts are helpful. Thanks a lot in advance.
