  1. Hello reefers!!! Sorry for the silence these past few months. A few things happened recently that have taken my attention away from the business. Unfortunately, I will have to pause Reef Nerd Aquatics to focus on my family and health. I will still have reef tanks though! Once things slow down or hopefully get resolved, I can get it back up and running again. I really appreciate all the support from everyone this past year. This has been a great community with tons of great friends I have met through the years and I will never give that up. Back to being a hobbyist for a while :).

    Again, thank you all!

  2. The mortar didn't work very well for me. Wonder if I was using it wrong. When I tried to pick it up after a couple of days, most of them came off. Ended up taking parts and assembling inside the tank. Unfortunately it's not the exact scape but it works well.

  3. The new gravity ATO worked great!!! I don't have to refill every few days.

Update on the 330 Gal (7'x3'x2')

Lighting: I decided to go with the Reefi Uno 2.0. I have always been a big fan of the radions but since the light will be right behind my desk, I wanted something with less glare. I hear a lot of raves about this light and never tested it out. At the same time, support my fellow small business.

After some lengthy discussion with Daniel, he custom made the bracket for my rimmed tank and a rendering of the light set up for me using 2040 T Slot Aluminum Extrusion.

We are doing 8 lights. Since I want mostly sps in the back and lps at the front, the 4 front light will be at an angle to focus more toward the back.

Flow: We had the chance to visit WWC back in May and with some guidance, we decided on 4 x MP40s for the tank. If more is needed I can add on. I used them before and have always loved the MPs so it definitely didn't take too much convincing. Though I was surprised that they didn't think I would need more than 4. I trust their judgement. Good news is I only had to order 3 more. Hoarding is good ... sometimes.

Rock Structure: I am going with Marco Rocks. I love the flat rocks and the versatility of the different shapes that they have available. With the help of my friend Ellie, we finished up the design and glued them together with mortar from the same company. Will be rinsing them out and going into the tank soon!

IMO, if you have a controller it's best to make it work for you. Even with a pump I have a max time on safety programed in the apex. Once it exceeds that time, it shuts off the pump and notifies me. It has caught a stuck float switch, and also an empty ATO reservoir for me. I have it on my to-do list to install a low level sensor/switch to catch a float switch stuck in the up/full position.

With your investment I believe it's definitely worth the extra monitoring and safety checks. I assume your controller controls and monitors your heaters? Just last week my controller notified me that the temp dropped a little low in the tank. Turns out one of my heaters had failed. With the Apex EB832 I also monitor the power draw of my return pump. I have a notification if the pump is supposed to be on, but it is not drawing sufficient power. This should catch a pump failure.

Yes. I use the Hydros controller. It def saved me many times with the system.

Same here, especially because I don't have the time like I used ta to dote over the tank obsessively. Mostly it was SPS that was reactive. I was able to save at least a tiny frag of everything I had by the time I figured out the issues, so the good news is it will catch back up again.

My only issue with fish that are reef safe "with caution" is I've never had any luck, even with caution, lol.

Understandable. I haven't seen you in two of the meeting now so that is def weird :). Don't work too hard now!

Nice. How are you controlling the gravity fed ATO output? Are you using a mechanical float valve? If so, have you considered adding any safety checks for this? For example, adding high/low sensors or float switches that are monitored by your controller. These would help notify you if there is a failure on your mechanical switch. You could also incorporate a solenoid valve on the ATO line that would be closed by the controller (and notify you) if the level got too high.

I am currently using a mechanical float valve. I do have a sensor (used by the original ATO) on the hydros that is used to send a message and also audible alarm when the level goes above.

That is one thing that does worry me when setting this up. Since it's just a float valve, I don't really have a way to auto stop it besides just a warning.

  7. Currently, I go through about 20-25 gal of ATO water every 2-3 days. With the addition of the 330gal, this will increase drastically. I am not sure if the ATO pump would be able to handle such a large amount daily.

I decided to swap it to a gravity fed ATO. The largest drum that I am able to fit in the area is 55 gal. I'm hoping this will be enough to cover all the tanks for at least 1 week (I doubt it but it's  better than refilling the ATO daily).

Water is pump from the RODI holding container across the room and into the ATO container.  We'll see how it works out!

  8. Made an order for clams a few months back. Threw them in the QT tank after inspection and scrubbing. Still had something left on them because the cleanup crew were all over them. Wonder what they sense that I can't see.

Much appericated!! Did you find that it work for you, and did you have any negative reactions from other corals or fish

None of the corals had any negative reaction. I dosed it initially as a precaution so I can't really say if it works or not.

I can't even imagine. If I brought that home, I'd have to sleep in it!

LOL my husband has his motives for letting me get it. For a while now, I was considering moving back to Oregon to be closer to my parents. They are getting old and I wanted to have more time with them. With this tank, we are probably staying for a bit :lol2:

Awesome! Of course it’s a good idea, you just might need a bigger shed to go with the tank emoji6.png.

Is the glass tempered? Wondering about drilling for overflows, returns, etc. seems you’ll be tight on space. Crazy idea - if the glass on the bottom isn’t tempered (I know not likely on something that size), put in a central overflow/return to minimize how much stuff sticks out.

 my husband would be so mad if we have to move again for a bigger fish room.

I'm not sure if it is tempered but it has drain in the back. It's designed to be peninsula.

    No description available.

Return would prob be to the top with pvc.
