  1. Does anyone here use the Epsom Salt, Calcium Chloride (snow removal) and Baking Soda method of dosing 2 Part? I am considering doing the DIY method but have not found anyone recently commenting that they are using this method. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/calcium-alk-magnesium-diy-dosing.36889/
  2. My suggestion would be to use a design like this one: http://www.radio-media.com/fish/UserHobogatoOnAS-1.jpg http://www.radio-media.com/fish/UserHobogatoOnAS-1.jpg It looks like the individual used the water coming back from the overflow to divert some of the water to the algae scrubber. The idea of having it in your sump is good, where are you thinking of placing the lights or light? I would suggest that you will want some plastic near where the plastic mesh and spraybar meet because when algae starts to grow the water can spray anywhere. Best of luck, I look forward to seeing the pictures when you are done.
  3. My thought would be that you would want some sort of light cycle minimal but some light and if you are using the dry Marco rock you will also want to either buy a bacteria culture in a bottle or you should get a small scoop of sand from someone that has an established tank. I am not really sure because I just go ahead and aquascape and put a frozen dinner shrimp in my new aquariums with a bacteria culture. As the bacteria becomes established the decaying shrimp is a food source. I rarely have issues with dyno or hair algae (I say rarely because right now I am just getting over bryopsis (pure evil)). Best of luck, I enjoy seeing your posts.
  4. I like your water storage video (Its Alive). It looks like a great setup.
  5. I always use tape on threads pvc or not and I have the same barrels as you, no leaks. My RO water has to be degassed as well to lower the DI resin consumption so that barrel has silicone on its threads to prevent leaks (it is a 35 gallon rain barrel, never used for rain).
  6. I just made that adjustment yesterday. I am also considering adding plexi or some form of plastic to keep the side spray down plus it would let me move the light closer. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  7. I have been running a large algae scrubber for about three weeks now and a friend of mine asked me if I could post the details so here it goes. I have a major hair algae problem in my DT and in the past I have had great luck in running a small algae scrubber on my tank so I thought I would try it on a much larger scale in my 500 gallon system. I purchased a piece of craft fabric from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Darice-27093252-Plastic-Canvas-12x18-Clear/dp/B0018N26NC/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1489360445&sr=8-13&keywords=plastic+mesh I threw this sheet of canvas where I knew it would start gathering some algae on it so as you see it come together that is why it already has algae on it. I also purchased a hydroponic LED that would promote the growth of the Algae: https://www.amazon.com/BEAMNOVA-Spectrum-Greenhouse-Hydroponic-Flowering/dp/B01FHDCT94/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1489360738&sr=8-18&keywords=hydroponic+led I teed off a part of the water coming from my return pump and have a portion of the water going to the 50 gallon refugium to feed the algae scrubber. In the first picture you can see the union used to connect it in the lower right. Here is everything in the sump. For my 60 gallon tank I built a smaller version of an Algae Scrubber from the King of DIY design: Here are my pictures: I hope this post will help someone start a DIY project of their own. I have many more that I have worked on it just takes a while to trim all of my pictures to post here.
  8. What types of fish do you like? Burrowing? Schooling? Because of the tank size and your current selection I would look for a gobi for something on the bottom. The Bangaii Cardinals have always been my favorite. Because you have corals I would get rid of that chocolate chip star. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
