  1. I have seen The Blob (the original one) at least a dozen times - I've never seen cyano that looks like it, but for sure runs over everything. (My family is from PA and that movie was on TV a lot there due to local stations wanting to show a movie that was filmed in PA).
  2. It is an AIO, so the display and sump are the same tank. Right now I have a Maxijet sucking water out of the sump side to put into the display side, but why waste electricity if I can use a siphon to do the same thing (aside from aesthetics) ? Only the siphoning end of the pipe or hose would be under water (in the sump side), otherwise the siphon won't happen from sump to display. So - important in the event of a power outage - the outflow would add at least a tiny bit of oxygenation by breaking the water surface in the display, and the flow back over the wall into the sump will add another bit of oxygenation breaking the water surface. I don't know if that is adequate oxygenation for anything near the bottom of the tank if there is an outage for more than just a short unknown length of time (flow is another problem, but battery operated bubblers don't really add any flow either).
  3. I was thinking of doing an infinite siphon for my 29g diy AIO, so I can take out the Maxijet I have pumping water from sump side to display side. I can't use macros with the pump in there, and am wondering if a siphon way to move water from side to side would be enough circulation in that size tank to get me through a power outage without needing battery things.
  4. Those are nightmares! I had a dream that the fish were turning into monsters that were trying to get out of the tank. In another dream which I had a couple times, the fish were swimming through the air all around the room and I was trying to catch them to put them back in the tank (they seemed oblivious to the fact that they weren't in water).
  5. For smaller volumes I use salt buckets that have holes in the lids for the hose.
  6. Take the tank apart and hold onto the unbroken panes until you or someone has a use for them. I've always used glass from old tanks to make overflows and baffles. Oh, also someone could use it for drilling practice!
  7. There is a really great article on this topic I read a while back, but unfortunately I didn't save the link. I can't help with the math, but I do know that in general, doing a 35g change once a week is a little bit more efficient at reducing waste than doing a 5g change 7 days a week. If I had an auto water changer though, I'd go for the continuous changes because you never know when something is going to die, or something in the atmosphere gets into the water, or pets stick their paws in the water.
  8. The way I've dealt with removing precipitate from using clumped salt in the past is not the most efficient, so I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on another method (it will be in my mixing Brute, not in the tank). This was a full bag that had about a 1" hole in it, which is too much salt to waste. I'm just going to use it for the liverock holding tank (my disconnected 50g sump) so the chemistry change isn't going to be a problem.
  9. I've had some rather crazy hobby-related dreams.
  10. Don't pop them! Emerald crabs will eat Valonia, but there is a possibility that they will break them, causing a worse problem. Bigger crabs might do a better job, but of you have small fish, there may be a problem, and you will need to watch for the crabs picking the polyps from corals.
  11. I was gonna replace my T5 bulbs for my 29g, but after a week of looking at prices, I decided to use this LED fixture which I had laying around. I burned some stuff using this fixture in the past, so if someone has some tips for intensity settings and distance from the surface, I'd really appreciate hearing them. There's no brand on it. It says 120 watts, has two knobs to adjust brightness, and has 3 fans. I still need to get something from which to hang it - sitting it low like this puts all the light in a central area, and there is a risk of a rambunctious, water-loving, high jumping kitten giving it a dunk. Thanks.
  12. If I did use a combo HOT filter- skimmer, do you think Icould use Biopellets in it, since the skimmer part will automatically skim the affluent? I have never used Biopellets, so maybe someone would knows more about them could respond? Just saw some bad reviews about the specific Skilter brand, but there is a CoraLife combo unit and probably some others I need to investigate.
  13. I'm trying to find a decent skimmer to use on my undrilled 29 diy AIO. I have an old CPR which uses a MJ1200, but I wasn't really happy with it when I was using it (about a decade ago). Are there any mods to make the CPR better (more predictable, productive, with less micro bubbles) ? Or some affordable but better alternative that uses a similarly sized pump (I don't have space for a large submersible pump)? EDIT TO ADD: I had a Skilter on my first reef tank, a 45g. I just noticed such things still exist. Seems better than the CPR skimmer I have, so maybe I should just get something like that, just use better media in it. Any thoughts on this idea?
  14. I just want to say thank you to the folks who donated frags to the raffle. The one I receives is a nice zoanthid, not sure what it's called (will take a picture later).
  15. Geez first meeting back, and here I am running very late. I'm on my way though. Looking forward to seeing folks.
  16. I had one of Doug's baby. I ended up giving away my fish, so I don't know where it is now - hopefully having a good life.
  17. I managed to find work coverage, so I will be able to attend. I look forward to seeing folks!
  18. I have had silicone repair tape from the hardware store in the past, which I used on tiny leaks in pipe joints, and used it on a pump I used to have. I'm not sure if there is something in it besides silicone, but I don't think the little bit I had in the tank on that pump caused any kind of problem. I think I got it at Home Depot, one time I had clear and another time I had black. It just sticks to itself, doesn't have any glue substance on it. It's stretchy, so it can be pulled tightly, and pressing on it will help it adhere more to itself. After a while it kind of melds onto itself. I don't know if this is the brand I had, but it's the same sort of thing: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Nashua-Tape-1-in-x-3-33-yd-Stretch-and-Seal-Self-Fusing-Silicone-Tape-in-Black-1743082/100206050
  19. I honestly believe, now in hindsight, that part of the reason I was letting my tank go all that time, was a loss of the enthusiasm that having in person meetings peovides. Even with the meetings only 4 times a year, there was always a buildup to meeting time, excitement on the boards the few days before a meeting, the meeting itself and getting to see folks and have people to yabber with about tank stuff which family members are sick of hearing and wouldn't understand. Then after the meetings for a couple months there would be enthusiasm with either experimenting with things learned from speakers, or watching progress on growth of frags purchased at the meeting, and also for some lucky people, some fun with new equipment won in the raffle. Then there would be about a month of chill time, then the buildup to the next meeting that would be a month away. I wish I didn't have to skip most Saturday meetings because of work... gonna try to get off for the upcoming meeting, but it might not be possible. I'm kind of wondering if part of the reason the forum has been so quiet the last couple of years, has been a reduction in enthusiasm due to not having in person meetings. The forums used to be very busy, lots of people posting frequently. It's practically dead now in comparison to several years ago.
  20. Denis, I'm so sorry this happened. I'm betting it was the old sand. I've got about 80 lbs of sand I have to dispose of, because I'm not risking re-using it. I always use 100% new water, but it only works because I use a lot of liverock to provide bacteria.
  21. When I emptied out the 75, I crammed most of the liverock into the 50g sump tank, which already had some rocks in it. I have next to nothing in corals now, but had to put them in something and wanted to use a drilled tank so I could plumb to the sump. All I had already drilled was a little 16H, so into that I crammed whatever pieces of liverock had mushrooms on them. I ended up not getting the plumbing done because of no time. Then I decided to dig the 29 out of the closet, which I wasn't going to use because I don't know if it's tempered or not to be able to drill it. I decided to use the 29 without being drilled. I McGuyvered a wall to make an all-in-one, by siliconing together couple of little pieces of glass that were still around from a random dismantled little tank. I had to put the wall at a weird angle to fit, so in front it's 4" and in back is 8.5", but it worked out better for arranging rock than a straight front-to-back wall would have worked. The sand in the sump section, is the top inch from the 75 (I kept just enough water in the 75 to keep the sand alive). Now I need some macros - I was gonna post in FS board, to ask if anyone has some, but I don't have time to pick up, so I might order some from eBay - has anyone ever ordered from those vendors? What macro that isn't green grows fast? It will be visible, so I need something that isn't ugly. My goal is just to keep what I still have alive from dying, and mostly I want my duncan to come back. I had a beautiful colony and two nice mini colonies, but now I just have 2 sad heads surrounded by skeleton heads. Aside from the Duncan, there are just some mushrooms, a few pieces of euphyllia, a very tiny patch of orange monti, 4 snails, and one hermit crab. Maybe after I have some macros growing, I'll put something else in the tank.
  22. I just want to maintain the nitrifying bacteria. The first reason I want to preserve the bed, is that it takes an eternity to establish a sand bed and I don't want to go through it again. The second reason is, I don't want to have to throw away all this sand when its roughly only a year and a half old.
