First I would like to thank WAMAS for nominating me for the July 2013 TOTM, it is a great honor. I began reefing in March 2011 with a basic 20 gallon long set up, and the rest is history. I was hooked immediately. I have had my current tank set up since December 2011, with a quick break down in January 2013 to drill the tank.
My current tank is an ADA 60p tank. It is about 17.5 gallons and all starphire glass. I have it set up in my living room, where my fiance and I spend most of our time. We found a great stand while visiting her Grandmother down in Harrisonburg, Virginia. We spent a weekend sanding, priming, and painting the stand and it turned out great. With the new stand, I was now able to have a sump. Paul at Aquarium One did a great job drilling the tank. After adding the sump, I quickly added a protein skimmer, dosing equipment, and various other fun gadgets
I have an Ecotech MP10 that I keep on reefcrest mode at about 75% power. My return pump is a Hydor Seltz L40.
I currently use a first generation Ecotech Radion. I have experienced great color, growth, and controllability while using the light.
I have about 12 pounds of sand and 15 pounds of rock in my display tank. My sump holds an SC-301 skimmer, a Clear Tides z90 ZEOvit reactor, and ZEOvit carbon.
I use ESV Bionic 2 part and a number of ZEOvit products.
I have a black clownfish, a six-line wrasse, a firefish, a banded coral shrimp, and a crocea clam. I would have to say the banded coral shrimp is my favorite because I have had him since I started back in March 2011, and he is a lot of fun to watch.
I feed 3 days a week with a combination of Rod's food, New Life Spectrum pellets, and Marine Cuisine. Plus the ZEOvit products.
Biggest challenge I faced was getting things right when I started using ZEOvit, and I am still working on it every day. I started off by running the reactor 24/7 and having too much media. This mistake cost me a few SPS pieces and loss of color in others. I believe I have it pretty much all figured out now and I'm looking forward to seeing those great ZEOvit colors.
I plan to upgrade to a 36"x18"x18" rimless tank within the next couple months. Aquarium One is drilling the tank and I have ordered a custom sump through Synergy, received a Bubble Magus Curve 5, bought a second MP10, and will probably switch to a 27" Maxspect Razor.
Thanks again to all the members on WAMAS for their help and for providing many of the corals I currently have in my tank. I look forward to continuing with reef keeping and helping out the WAMAS community in any way that I can.
