Seal leak in mixing station

I've had this annoying leak in my saltwater mixing station for some time

Usually the salt creep fixes it, but I wanted to fix it this time

 

Should I use silicone around the outside ?

If you haven't already, I would first try sanding and deburring the edges of the hole you cut in the water barrel for the uniseal.

If your going to use silicon, I would drain it and put silicon on the inside as well.

Pull the pipe, pull the seal out, clean and deburr the hole and then press a new seal into place. The uniseal is to be removed and put in the vessel from the outside.

When inserting the pipe, I use a bit of spit for lubricant to help it slide in place without putting undue stress on uniseal.

I wouldn't use silicone on a uniseal, it's really not great for use on plastics.  My understanding is it works great on glass because it's silica based, just like glass, but if you apply it to plastics it won't bond as well, hence the issues people have with acrylic baffles in glass tanks and how to properly attach them.  I would do what was suggested above, the uniseals work through pressure exerted on the plastic and on the pipe, a tight seal is created because the pressure pushes the rubber grommet into any holes and fills it in creating the water tight seal.  If the hole is too big, it won't seat properly, same as if it is rough or is not uniform.

I'd ditch the Uni-seal altogether and just use a HDPE bulkhead.

so i ordered a replacement uniseal ...put some plumbers tape around and plugged back in...no leaks...

maybe the uniseal was just old
