HgrReef's RSM S500 Stick Tank

Recommended Posts

It's been quite awhile since posting a tank thread on here, so here we go...

Back in December I made the decision to upgrade the 75g to a 120.  After a bit of deliberation, I decided to go with the Red Sea S500 (120g) system after seeing Hopeitlives setup so many times.  It really makes owning a tank a breeze with respect to maintenance!  So, the system has been set up now for about 6 months, and I have already gone through a nasty GHA phase that was more persistent than those I've experienced in the past with other new setups.  Frank (Surf&Turf) and Daryl (Hopeitlives) were quite the crutch and helping hand during, what seemed to be, a never ending battle with the stuff!  Today, the tank is about 98% free of GHA and the minute amounts of cyano that showed up briefly has pretty much disappeared as well.

Anyway, on to the stats:

RSM S500 (120g)

Skimmer- supplied Red Sea C-Skim

Filtration- supplied 15g sump/refugium, BRS dual media reactor for GFO and Carbon

Flow- 3 740gph circulation pumps, 2 Maxspect XF150 Gyres, 2 modded Tunze 6025s.  About 12,000-14,000gph total.

Lighting- supplied 10 bulb T5HO

Ca/Alk- Bubble Magus dosing pump.  I dose Ca/Alk/Mg through this.  Nothing else gets dosed at this time.

I have a ton of smallish fish in this system which seems to really scale things down a bit, and offers a different look as compared to the big showy fish.  The coral either came over from my 75, or were purchased primarily from folks here on WAMAS or from our little reef club out here in the hills  : )  Some were purchased as frags, some purchased as larger pieces.  The tank is only about 6 months old now, so there isn't a ton of growth just yet.

Anyway, thanks for looking and on to some pics!

Won a chip of this in an eBay auction for $3 a few years back. It was said to be a Mummy Eye. The growth edge gets a deeper green while the center is definitely a shade of yellow. The eyes vary from pink, red and orange.

Once it crests the crock it's mounted to, I'll definitely get you a piece!

Yeah, it's still very much a young tank. We'll see where it goes.

That's an Oregon Tort. Never did much in my 75, but finally it's starting to show some growth!
