A once beautifull tank

After battling for months, spending money & getting extremely frustrated, I have been beaten down by ostreopsis, a very toxic dynoflangellate!

Dynos 1 / me 0

Here is a picture of the toxic soup right after I removed the lifestock.

post-2633038-143213967899_thumb.jpg

I lost 90% of my SPS, including softball sized birdsnests... Some small SPS's are in a hospital tank but started to get RTN. I was able to save all my fish & inverts. I have a 6" diameter miami hurracane chalice that made it out ok as well.

Tried the following methods with no success:

1. 5 days no lights (twice)

2. Fauna Marin Ultra algae X

3. Kordon Ick (proven to work by other members in other forums)

4. peroxide dosing

5. No water changes in 2 months

6. Introduction of a different dynoflangellates that could kill ostreopsis

7. Zeovit Cyano Clean & zeobak

8. Microbe lift

9. Salinity change

10. different bacteria sources

One thing I noticed in this journey is that no matter how dirty the water was, no hair algae would grow. I am not sure where the tank got the dyno's but they grew very quickly when I changed the lights to a 6x24w ATI fixture & started the zeovit method.

Still not sure if I am going to reboot or not but if I do, I will get new rock.

I dumped some bleach in the tank and watching this algae die made my day.

Some forms of dinos are absolutely brutal. I've had the misery of dealing with them twice on the same tank. Currently beat back with FM Ultra Algea X, but you already tried that.

Hope the reboot goes well.

Good luck on the reboot. I hope you stick around. It can be frustrating at times, that is for sure.

Sorry to be reading this. Always loved your tank. Always wanted to come see it, your just so far away.

When you reboot, let me know. I will send you a little care package.

Thanks everyone.

I dont know if this algae is the devil's algae or what but I found some growing 3 days after I dumped bleach on the tank. I did dump a whole bottle of peroxide afterwards and that did the trick, I hope.. Currently I am taking it down, cleaning everything and boiling rocks so I can start fresh. I dont know what I am going to do with the stuff I have in the hospital tank, I dont really want to use my existing live rock just because I want to avoid any possible dynoflangellates cysts that could last over 100 years I believe.

Hey Neto,

I'm very sorry to hear that! I don't have a tank set up at the moment, but I hope that the community will band together to help get your tank back to beautiful without having to repurchase everything!

As I'm planning my build, I'm looking into the necessity of a UV sterilizer. Did you have one set up on your system?

Thanks for the info and good luck rebuilding!

I did not buy a uv sterilizer, that was going to be my next option but it was too late for me to even try. All birdsnests had rtn all over, other sps frags died & i just decided to take my losses and start again.

This has been probably the most frustrating experience in this hobby, but still starting over and watch everything grow again will be very enjoyable.

Thanks for your thoughts

Be careful with the chemicals in your quest to kill the demon. If you mix the wrong stuff together you could hurt your lungs. Especially if you are looking into the tank laughing as the dino burns away. I'm just sayin.....

Not that I am dumb enough to have experienced this first hand in a small room or anything......coming out coughing like I was going to die........reaching for the window frantically. Hshaha. Ok....I did do that once.
