Having been born and raised in Hawaii, Karen Brittain’s interests have always revolved around the ocean and marine life. She graduated from the University of Hawaii in 1983 and found her passion soon after in the captive breeding and rearing of reef fish which she persued in her garage. At that time she was employed as a Reef Tank Diver at Sea Life Park Hawaii and began volunteering at the Waikiki Aquarium in an effort to learn more about her passion. Her aquaculture career began in 1987 with an assistant position at the Waikiki Aquarium working on aquaculture methods for mahimahi,  Coryphaena hippurus. For the next sixteen years she moved through different positions within the Aquarium all of which involved the rearing of marine species from food fish to ornamentals including both fish and invertebrates. In 2003 she accepted a position at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology working with the pink snapper “Opakapaka” and she has spent the last year working on a Rising Tide Conservation project focusing on hatchery methods for the purple masked angelfsih, Paracentropyge venusta.

Karen is currently rearing marine ornamental fish at home in the garage through her small business Reef Friendly Fishes which was started in 1997. She currently raises several species of clownfish as the bread and butter crop which funds her work with more challenging species such as angelfish and butterflyfish. Over the past couple of years she has successfully raised Genicanthus watanabei, Genicanthus personatus, Paracentropyge venusta and Centropyge acanthops to the juvenile stage and encourages marine aquarium hobbyists to persue captive breeding.
