What Is the Government Doing For Coral?

Recommended Posts

If this is better suited to the Refugium section, please move it there.

I was talking with some folks and I was amazed with how little people, who are interested in Conservation, know about what is going on at a Government level. I'm sharing  this link  to a news letter I contribute to for anyone who is interested in what the Federal Government is doing in regards to coastal activities. This is a quarterly new article which gives a brief overview of some of the projects we are doing around the country. While not all pertain to coral, some do.

The articles usually have a section on corals and climate change, or a project involving coral reseeding or something along those lines. I don't normally work with coral specifically, but my projects often involve protecting habitat with coral and my projects are often highlighted in these articles.

The article I thought you guys might find interesting in on page 5, and again on page 8. Unfortunately it's not good news, but it is interesting.

Thanks for this.

Does anybody know what's behind the cyanobacteria imbalance in Hawaii? The article details symptoms, location and statistics, but doesn't say much about what the prevailing theories are as to what is behind the imbalance.

Thanks for the article.

It reminds me of an older article that Rich Ross reference in his recent article. He referenced this:

http://www.nature.com/ismej/journal/v6/n3/full/ismej2011114a.html

It talks about the "Black Reefs" due south of Hawaii and the relationship between algae (including cyano) and the presence (or lack of presence) of iron.

As far as I know there is no definitive answer for it as of yet. I'll make some calls when I'm in the office tomorrow and see if I can't find anything out.
