Horrible experience at House of Tropicals

I went to HoT tonight to look for a tank to get back into the hobby. I spent about 45 minutes walking around the store and not a single employee could be bothered to see if I needed any help. I even asked for some help and was told I will be right with you, waited in the same spot for 5 minutes. Went to go look at the all-in-ones on the other side of the store and saw the employee I asked for help talking and joking with another employee. There were very few other customers in the store. All in all I was ready to spend a good amount of money but I will look elsewhere to get a tank now.

That stinks man, maybe it was an off day at the store. Normally I have a pretty easy time getting help there, but I know things like that happen when you get a disinterested employee. The sad part is we Marylanders are getting fewer and fewer options as far as aquarium stores. Exotic Aquatics just "temporarily" closed up ( they say they're moving, but the had the worst customer service of all IMHO).

My only other suggestion of somewhere somewhat local to get a good deal is That Fish Place in Lancaster,PA. I know it's a bit of a hike, but they have a massive selection. They're also almost always having some sort of sale. Join their member club and you'll get all the emails and mailers to clue you in. I can just about promise they'll have everything you'll want and then some. The only 2 downsides are that they can get pretty busy on weekends, and since the have a .com, sometimes items go out of stock quickly.

This weekend is 30% off livestock and 20% off corals.

Come on over to the VA LFS.. I know several of the local stores have some nice tanks in. Not sure what youre looking for, but Petland had a super sweet DeepBlue rimless cube.

HOT has 1-2 decent employees and the rest are of no use. The best employee they had was Richard and he is no longer there.

Todays Pet in Columbia has some really nice staff members, and they carry a variety of tanks. Pretty good actually for a small store. I would feel confident recommending them for a MD store (drygoods and customer service at least) fish and corals are hit or miss.

  • 1 year later...

Bumping this thread as I visited HOT over the weekend just to look around, and it'll probably be my last visit. The health of their livestock is atrocious to say the least. Most of the tanks had fish with either ich or velvet. Saw a couple of starving mandarins, and one that had a chunk taken out of its side - was still alive. Several dead or dying fish throughout the store (both fresh and saltwater). Dry goods sold at very inflated prices.

How they stay in business... I have no idea.

Agreed. I only walk into the store to get blackworms and then right back out. I could care less to even look to see what they have in stock. Truly is sad!
